The Winning Season - The Second Chance EP
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: 2007
Who Is It?
Brian Pascoe, a one-man band who has dubbed himself The Winning Season. Pascoe is from Bridgewater, New Jersey. I can't say much about Bridgewater because I've never been there (at least not to my knowledge), but I imagine they have lots of diners and VFW halls. Sounds like a suburban highlife, which is precisely the appeal behind The Winning Season. With his one-man-band instrumentation and the sweet acoustic and electronic tinkerings, Pascoe creates an effort that's pretty adorable in front of the local coffee shop.
How Is It?
But adorable doesn't really cut it, now does it? Not really, especially when you're working in a genre that is majorly overruled with adorableness. It's not that he doesn't have an ear for melody. He does. Listen to the bridge on "Even The Lost Survive" or the chorus of "As I". It's just that, all by being too sweet, too tender and slightly stuck in high school romantics and semantics, Pascoe leaves most of The Second Chance EP on the uncreative side. Between this and the home studio recordings, it's the kind of adorableness that needs a bit more shiner.
