Say True - 06.19.13

Interviewed by
Say True - 06.19.13The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

Say True

1. How did you get your band name?

"Say true" is a phrase used in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, which is one of my favorite series of books. I love the sound of the phrase and the implication of being "true." To yourself, to your word, to your beliefs, etc.

2. How did this band get started?

I played drums for Dave Trautz's band, The Ready Aim Fire! and I was working on my own songs during that time. When The Ready Aim Fire! broke up, Dave started working with me on these songs that I decided to make into an EP. My good friend Mike Jimenez (Rufio, Science Fiction Theater) tracked the drums for the album and I coerced Dave into playing the other instruments for the tracking, since no one wants to hear a drummer trying to be a guitarist or keyboardist. There are notable exceptions to that, but I am not one of them.

3. What bands are you influenced by?

The list is endless, of course, but some of the all time favorites would have to be The Cure, early U2, Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Radiohead, The Smiths. I'm not sure that I sound like any of them, but they are to blame for me making music.

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Any of the bands previously mentioned. I am such a huge fan of all of them.

5. Best food to eat on tour?

A home-cooked meal that someone is kind enough to offer. Otherwise, it's another day of PB&J's. I rarely spend money on food on tour. I'm a cheapskate like that.

6. Why should people listen to your band?

It's a fun listen, the musicians who played are amazing, I think it has elements that can be appreciated across a variety of tastes, and worst case scenario, you don't like it and now have someone new to send hate mail to! Win, win.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?

The only sport I really like or am any good at is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and since I don't think I want to make a living of getting punched/kicked/kneed/elbowed in the face, I will make my trade with whoever is the highest paid professional athlete on the injured list that still gets his salary without having to practice or play.

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Wait, why? Am I getting a Grammy???

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?

It would be great if it could become more of a community instead of a competition. Everyone wants to be the best, the biggest, the most famous. I know there are people out there that still support others and still do it for the love of music, but in general, it's pretty cut-throat.

10. Memorable tour experience?

Less than five miles from home at the end of a tour, we started singing the Eisley song "Lost At Sea." We were literally singing the words "Congratulations cause we've made it all the way home" when we had a tire blowout and ended up spending another hour or so on the side of the freeway putting on the spare while the celebratory pizza we had waiting got cold. The timing and irony of it was just too funny. Maybe you had to be there.

11. What does AP.net mean to you?

AP.net has always been such a great resource for both bands and music fans. It is such a great way for fans and bands to connect, to discover new artists or find news on artists you already like. I appreciate all of the ways that they help music from unsigned bands to the most popular ones.

12. What is your favorite song to play?

"Lorem Ipsum." I love the way each instrument fits together and the dynamics of each part.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?

I seldom vacation, but Vegas is always a good time. I guess either that or camping, just get away from everything for a while.

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?

The Beatles and The Beach Boys. My parents had all their music and those two bands were pretty much the soundtrack to my childhood.

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?

Is The Force a super power? I'll take that. I could get things from across the room without getting up, open doors without touching them, and I would get a lightsaber. I get a lightsaber, right?

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?

I'm not really very superstitious. Sorry. Booorrring.

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?

I have puked every single time I have ever watched The Wizard of Oz. I promise this is true and I don't know why either. It's really weird and I cannot explain it, but I'm sure it's something that people have been dying to know.

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?

I don't really listen to the radio as much as CD's/mp3's, but there are some stations that do really cool shows with local/unsigned/newer artists and I love those shows. I really wish it could go back to DJ's playing what they like instead of what they have to play so many times per day. I would like to think that in the right format, we could flourish.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to hang out with my friends and family and I like to read and play video games. I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?

Umm, I can rip a phone book in half with my bare hands. Yeah, guess that's all I've got. You win this one.
