Valfader - 08.05.13

Interviewed by
Valfader - 08.05.13The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

1. How did you get your band name?
At the time Gaz was heavily influenced by Grand Magus's earlier albums. The track "Chooser of the Slain (Valfader)" really stood out and led him to do some research into the Mythology surrounding Odin. Dean and Matt liked a lot of the elements associated with it and so a name was decided.

2. How did this band get started?
Valfader was born in 2010 at a local drinking establishment in Bath UK. Band members Dean and Gaz (Psycho Jack) decided to form a new band with a more stoner / laid back vibe. Deciding to be a 3 piece, all they needed was a bassist. After trying out a few, Matt strolled up and a winning combination of long hair and van ownership clinched him the spot.

Since then Valfader got down to writing some tunes - during this time our songs got longer, slower and heavier to a point where all members felt we had found a sound that was ours!

3. What bands are you influenced by?

Dean: I absolutely love the last two offerings from the stoner band Elder; highly recommend. Also adore Opeth. Otherwise I listen to loads of different stuff from Pearl Jam to Clutch to Dream Theatre.

Matt: Really enjoyed Converge's latest offering and Meshuggah's Koloss is an absolute beast! Also listening to Cult of Luna, Mouth of the architect and Rosetta, but ISIS is still number one! Been listening to a lot of Slayer again since Jeff passed away - they were what got me into metal! Also Deftones have been a big influence - oneloveforchi!

Gaz: I like the old school Sabbath, Ozzy and Dio years, can't go wrong with a bit of Led Zepplin. Then anything and everything goes. I love Crowbar, Down, Eyehategod, Kyuss, Neurosis, Orange Goblin and anything else that floats my boat.

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
If we had the opportunity to tour with any of the bands that have influenced us that would be great! But overall what we look for in bands is a lot of passion and intensity, and most importantly a humble laid back attitude. We're not interested in ego battles.

5. Best food to eat on tour?
Whatever you can buy from a petrol station! Basically anything wrapped in pastry or that can be consumed cold is all good.

6. Why should people listen to your band?

Because we carry a lot of honesty, emotional intensity and variation in our music. We draw from a lot of different styles and feel that we have created something quite unique. Most importantly, every song tells a story and aims to draw you in and hypnotise you until the end.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
That's a weird ass question, man. Congratulations, you've stumped us!

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Jamie Fraser for recording and producing us, John Blackshaw for the awesome artwork, and all the family, friends and fans who have shown us love and support!

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry as a whole is pretty horrendous - it focuses on rehashing the lowest common donominator in any given genre and reducing music to a shallow, uninspiring, souless money making machine. In an ideal world, it would be the most hard working, talented and passionate artists who would be celebrated. There is such an enormous wealth of incredible underground music going unrecognised, and that makes us very sad.

10. Memorable tour experience?

Sadly due to work and family commitments we haven't had the opportunity to go on tour yet. But the cogs are in motion so keep an eye on your local venues.

11. What does AP.net mean to you?

Any website that is putting the time and effort into promoting underground music is good with us. You guys are doing a great job, thank you for supporting us!

12. What is your favorite song to play?
Actually it's a song called 'Opening', that we haven't recorded yet but we will be going into the studio to lay it down very soon. Keep an ear out, it's quite an epic one.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?

Dean: I would love to go back to Vancouver in Canada; it's an amazing city!
Gaz: Anywhere with a chilled out vibe, good people, good food and a decent bar!
Matt: the Brecon Beacons in Wales.

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Gaz: Queen and Black Sabbath.
Dean: A lot of sixties music from my Mum.
Matt: Slayer!

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?

Matt: Invisibility, but would I use it for good or evil?!?
Gaz: Super strength like the Hulk....Who doesn't want to be super strong like the Hulk?!
Dean: I would love to be able to fly, I have a lot of lucid dreams where I'm flying so I think it would feel quite natural!

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?

We like to have a little cuddle together and a hi five before we play; give each other some moral support! Very metal :p

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?

As much as our music may not reflect it, we are actually all very pacifistic, gentle, loving dudes. We just have a lot of emotion to air!

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
Certain stations like Planet Rock and Team Rock play an excellent variety of good music. However, most mainstream stations are pretty terrible and cover such a narrow range of material. We hope that our music will be played more on stations dedicated to rock in the near future. The one thing we have working against us is that our tracks are rather long. So far we've been played on several underground radio shows though, which is cool.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?

Matt: cycling, running around after his 17 month old son
Dean: I have a couple of other musical projects on the go, and also practice Reiki, strangely enough!
Gaz: I'm pretty much a full time Dad and work nights, which uses up a lot of my time. But I'm enjoying restoring old drum kits to
their former glory at the moment in my spare time.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?

Matt can play piano and is an excellent writer! Dean plays quite a lot of drums and records his own solo tracks, and Gaz has rather an artistic bent.
