|The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:|
1. How did you get your band name?
At Download 2009 when a very pissed Daniel Hayes decided that the word CHUNG would mean 'Line between sunburnt and unsunburnt skin' (a tan line)' Then fast forward a couple of years when Danny and Dan were discussing ideas for a new band and it just popped from the back of Dan's crazy brain - "Why don't we call it something proper random like 'Emperor Chung'" and it stuck!
2. How did this band get started?
After departing a previous band, Danny and Dan decided to form a new project that was fun and used more of their current influences and throw a penguin in there for good measure. We decided we wanted to create a band playing the kind of music that we loved but it had to be fun! We got Eddie in on drums to start with - Danny being a crazy songwriting beast came up with 3-4 awesome songs in a matter of days that we worked on for a while. We then recruited Rich a few weeks later so we could get some dual harmonies cracking off and then Martin to sing over it all a few weeks after that. BOOM! The Chung was complete.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
We have a massive range of influences; Coheed & Cambria, Queen, Big Wreck, Thin Lizzy, Opeth, Tesseract, Eric Johnson, Alter Bridge, the list goes on. We appreciate great songwriters whatever the genre. We're all music geeks so we listen to almost anything and everything. We do all have different tastes and that definitely comes through in our individual performances on the album and on stage.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
All of the above! To tour with your heroes, with the bands you grew up listening to, the bands that influence you would just be a dream come true.
5. Best food to eat on tour?
In an ideal world we would take Annie who runs Annie's Burger Shack in Nottingham on tour with us. She is originally from Rhode Island and we all know that Americans do burgers best. Hers really are the best god damn burgers in the whole world. We could eat them every day quite easily!!! We do consume an insane amount of Krispy Kremes when we are on the road as well.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
We have a mental concept/story behind our whole album that people can get into. Chico Chung is our main character, he is an Emperor Penguin. He is trained by a massive master seagull called Sven Seagull after his father is murdered by minions from the Chinese Zodiac sent by the evil Emperor Gillette who is threatened by his growing power. The members of the Chinese zodiac are hunted down one by one and destroyed by Chico who is seeking revenge for his father's death. Eventually he battles with Gillette which draws our story and album to an epic conclusion. The story is told through the music and lyrics. We have artwork of doom to tell the story and bring our characters to life. With that we have a very visual presence as well. For the grumpy non-penguin loving folks, our music is very melodic in comparison to other bands of a similar genre but with an occasional brutal edge. Plus dual guitar harmonies of insane proportions!
7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
No brainer - Rocky Balboa
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
We will refrain from sarcasm and answer this question seriously. We would thank our Manager, Heather. She works harder than the rest of us put together so she would definitely be first. Daz at Binger Creative Studios who has done all our artwork. The man is ridiculously talented. Alex who produced our album and understood us from day one and gave us exactly what we wanted and more. Our friends and family for always supporting us and of course the fans who we appreciate beyond measure. The last year for us has been amazing and there have been so many people that have taken a chance on us or given us a shot so that we are lucky enough to have a pretty long list of people who deserve a thank you.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Musicians no longer need to queue in traffic ANYWHERE ever! Really though more opportunities should be given to unsigned bands. Its such a shame that some frickin awesome bands have called it day simply due to financial constraints. We've all seen some shit bands who landed a killer support slot just because they had the money to buy on. It should be about the pure raw talent and not about the dollar. Some of the talent that we have played with on the unsigned circuit could give the best of them a run for their money. Instead of spending £50 on a ticket to see a band you have seen time and time again go and pay 3 quid to get in to your local music venue and discover some real raw talent that is out there right now. You never know who you might be watching before they blow up!
10. Memorable tour experience?
Download festival 2013. There were Dyson air blades in the toilets for god sake. That's the life right there!
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
Well, for one, it means a lot that you asked us for an interview - so, thanks dudes! Its a great place to keep bang up to date with new releases. There isn't a lot you won't find on absolutepunk!!
12. What is your favourite song to play?
That's a hard one. We each have a favourite track. "Pyramid" is a definite favourite. However I think we all agree that "Free at Last," which is our final song, is always pretty epic.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Croyde in North Devon. Surfers paradise. Its chilled out, great pubs, great food, friendly locals. Can't beat it!
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
How do you pick one super power over another? Teleportation would be the most useful for us as a whole as we do so much travelling it would be nice to just be there already!!
16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
No, to be honest. Sorry to be boring. We generally don't get that nervous so we are always having a laugh before shows. We warm up, have a wee and we're good to go. Download being the exception. You could say we were slightly nervous for that one. Our Manager gave us a "Kurt Russell in the film 'Miracle'" style pep talk though which fired us up ready to skate in the Olympics....err wait no....play at Download.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
Daniel Hayes has a chunk of ear missing, not quite sure what happened there. He also snores like a dying triceratops.
Martin carries around a deformed 2 litre bottle of water with him at gigs and practise - its proper battered and just looks depressing. He also knows all the Lake District mountains!
Rich is addicted to cheesecake to a worrying degree. He also has more band t shirts than anyone else on the planet.
Eddie breaks sticks at every single gig. He also once unblocked a pipe at the house he just bought and flooded his garden with shit.
Danny once carried his guitar around all day on a day out in Blackpool before a gig. It enjoyed the pleasure beach more than anyone. He also has a penguin toilet seat!
18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
Mainstream radio needs to support unsigned bands more. We write catchy, interesting music which we hope will keep listeners happy and keep radio stations plugging us.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Play guitar, attend gigs, watch movies, eat food, travel and laugh at anything remotely amusing.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Instant knockout techniques crafted through intense study of giraffes in a neck swinging battles of doom!
