I'm not seeing how The Story So Far or Man Overboard are not straightforward pop punk.
He said they are straightforward pop punk. They're already huge and have a big fanbase so that's why it's hard to be a straightforward pop punk band now because you have to compete against those 2 bands.

I find it ridiculous and worrisome when people think of music as a competition.
I'm not saying it's so much a competition as it is just getting people to notice your band. There's already bands that do the exact thing these guys are doing better and have been around longer so it's hard for them to get started.
