Next weekend is Valentines Day. Whoop dee fucking doo. That's right, it's political time with your host, Chris March. Valentines Day is a whole crock of crap. One day a year where you should do special and sweet romatic things for the one you 'love' is ridiculous. A silly excuse to suck more money from the public, that's all it is. People should do sweet things every day of the year for no reason at all..not because cupid has arrows aimed at your ass. I'm not saying I boycott Valentines, I celebrate it and am usually worried about having a 'valentine', but please..romance should be a year round thing, don't get flowers one day a year for your lovey just cause it's expecting on Feb 14th.

Okay, nevermind that, music time. I think i got a swell list this week too. Recognize.

Maxeen - Wow. I can't believe I haven't heard of these guys sooner. Incredible! Many critics describe them as our generation's rendition of The Police. Trust me on this one, Maxeen is a band you must know.

As Patient Stars Align - This is a band to keep an eye out for. Seriously. Think Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World with some nice synth here and there. Really an impressive band. Jared Kaufman likes them too, so now you know they are tight!

Waiting For Tomorrow - I got their demo in my mailbox this past week, and I was rather impressed. I guess I'd describe them as a Hardcore/Emo band. They are like Matchbook Romance with hardcore screaming. If hardcore scares you, don't hesitate to check em out. Likewise for those scared of anything but hardcore.

Atmosphere - He's that rapper guy that's on Epitaph. I hesitated to check him out till just this week, and I actually like him. I always appreciate some good rap and hip hop or techno stuff here and there, and as far as rap goes, this is the type of rap I look for. Not that "make that money" crap. Real rap, hard and real. Check him out.

From Autumn To Ashes - I finally mustered up the good sense to get their latest release The Fiction We Live (and when I say 'sense' I mean I finally scrapped together enough cash to pick up some CDs that I've been wanting for a while.) Hardcore kids will be disapointed because there is alot more Fran than Benjamin on this record. But I really really enjoy this record. Don't be afraid of it, it's less hardcore, but still very very good.

Well, Happy Valentines Day everyone! WOO! Some good songs for this week that I'd suggest are: (I do realize it may be slightly hypocritical to denounce Valentines Day then throw some love songs out there for you. I hope you find a way to deal with that.)

Over It - Fall
John Mayer - Only Heart, Body Is A Wonderland
Matchbook Romance - Tiger Lily, Promise
Coldplay - Yellow
Ataris -Won't Spend Another Night Alone, San Dimas High School Football Rules
Blink182 - I'm Lost Without You, All The Small Things
Box Car Racer - There Is
Brand New - No Seatbelt Song
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
Saves The Day - Tomorrow Too Late
Something Corporate - As You Sleep
Thrice - Silhouette, Trust, In Years To Come

You are welcome to leave more love songs in the comments or anything else you might have on your mind after this week's recommendations. See ya next week.

I checked out as patient stars align from Jared Kaufmans recommends and i gotta say i was really impressed. they are one of few bands that have made me feel that way in quite a while. they are kind of like the mars volta mixed with saves the day or death cab for cutie, i don't know kind of hard to explain, you'd just have to hear for yourself. by the way, does anyone know their website address?

Nice recommendations! Although I don't agree entirely with the whole valentines day thing, i love it! And it's not just some holiday invented so money may be spent. Here is how it came about,

In truth, the history of Valentine's Day is equal parts blood, violence, persecution and paper hearts filled with romantic words.

Saint Valentine was a real person — though historians aren't exactly sure which real person the day refers to, as there are three saints with similar names from roughly the same time period. Historians theorize that the Saint Valentine of Valentine's Day fame was a third century Christian priest serving in Rome.

Claudius II, the emperor at the time, made the strange decision that single men fought better than married ones. Since the Roman empire was at this point beset on all sides by unfriendlies, Claudius II banned marriage among young men.

Apparently Valentine — or Valens, or Valentius, or Valentinian, we're not sure of the name — continued performing secret marriages in defiance of the imperial edict. When Claudius found out (as emperers always do), Valentine got chucked into prison. While awaiting a doubtlessly painful execution, the legend goes, he fell in love with his jailer's daughter, and sent her secret love letters signed "From your Valentine." Valentine's execution was supposedly carried out on February 14, 270, and the rest is somewhat dubious history.

The randy Romans were the source of another potential origin of the holiday. Much earlier than the above story, pagan Romans celebrated the Feast of the Lupercalia, one of the many orgy-centric all-day bashes enjoyed by Romans. During festival time, women would write love letters and leave them in a large urn. Each Roman man would draw a note from the urn and pursue the woman who had written the message they chose.

Lupercalia was also held on February 14, and in addition to the secret messages, it involved the chopping up of goats, running through the streets naked while swinging goat pieces and similarly unappetizing traditions which thankfully did not make it into the festivities of the modern holiday. As Christianity took over the empire, Lupercalia was banned, and Valentine's Day was offered as a substitute.

So while you look forward to this most romantic of all holidays, remember the chopped up goats, the executed priest and all the other grim reminders that though Saint Valentine's Day is a happy time for lovers now, it wasn't always so.
