Set Chopin Free

Posted by: Jason Tate (09/09/13)
A new Kickstarter has launched aiming to get the works of Chopin out of copyright purgatory.
Here's how it works: If the project successfully meets its fundraising goal ($75,000 by Sunday, October 20), it will hire musicians (some of the best Chopin pianists in the world) to record and release to the public under a CC0 license the entirety of Chopin's life's work, some 245 pieces. Then, if you're making a movie (or writing a Wikipedia page, or a blog post, or whatever else you might be doing) and looking for that particular Nocturne, you'll have a place to turn to.

Had no idea recordings of Chopin music are copyrighted. The perks aren't incredible, but I hope this thing gets funded.

Frederic Chopin is perhaps my favorite composer of all time. He was incredibly creative melodically and harmonically while maintaining a distinctly Polish sense of rhythm. He was not at all an orchestrator, though; 100% of his works involve the piano and all of them except for 9 (the highlights really being his piano concertos and his lone cello sonata) are exclusively done on piano.

If you know nothing about classical music and are unsure that you've heard his work: if you've seen "The Pianist," you've heard Chopin.

Pretty cool, but it does suck that the people performing won't be getting their share now.

Also. I am pretty sure it's pronounced "Sho - pahn" as opposed to "chop - in".

Is that right?

Wow I am pretty surprised at either trolls, or kids who don't know a little about him.

This won't affect performances, if anything hopefully it increases interest in performances because now more people can discover his music.

very informative, thanks!
Super weird that his music isn't public domain though. I thought it was supposed to be after 100 years or something?
