Shaun Cooper of Taking Back Sunday Talks New Album

Posted by: Jason Tate (09/25/13)
Shaun Cooper of Taking Back Sunday talked with Pop-Break about Riot Fest, the recording of their new album and more.
Itís kind of hard to see where theyíre gonna come out because they still havenít been mixed, so we havenít really heard full versions. The stuff with Sapone had a few more electronic elements and the stuff with Marc Hudson was a little bit more rock oriented with more organic kind of songs. So weíre just trying to see how itís all going to fit together. And we donít know exactly how many songs are going to make it on the record. Weíre just going to try and really make it the most potent record we can. If thatís an eight song record, nine song record, ten song recordÖ I donít know yet.

I don't mind them experimenting and all but I hope the album is cohesive.

I agree. The last album felt a like a lot of hits and misses all rolled in one. I'm also holding out on a bit less pitch correction on this next album. Adam sounds better when he's not perfect.

Electronic elements doesn't always mean EDM.. I'm sure its a lot more subtle, think Straylight Run - Prepare To Be Wrong.

That'd be interesting. I was hoping they'd change it up a bit.

Will probably check it out. I know not everyone is like this, but people really, really need to get over TAYF. It was one record, and it's never going to get a sequel. I'm excited to hear new TBS though!

Sapone did well with the experimental noises and elements of Crime In Stereo's latest (which happens to be my favorite album)...unfortunately, Taking Back Sunday just doesn't do it for me anymore. I thought the self-titled record was the best since Louder Now or even WYWTB, but I got bored with it fairly quickly. They're still not a bad band, and I'm sure I'll give this a few spins anyways in case it changes my mind.

If Flicker Fade is any indication it may at least match up to Louder Now.

Guessing something subtle or ambient. Hoping for something that's not like that latest Hit The Lights.

Agreed, it's a great album, but I feel people expect them to pigeonhole that sound for the rest of their career. Bands grow and evolve. Embrace it.
