ABSOLUTExclusive: Stream the First Single from The Republic of...

Posted by - 10:19 AM on 10/16/13
The Republic of Wolves made some noise around these parts with the 2010 release of Varuna, a weighted, introspective record that came served with some Devil and God-esque leanings and captured much of our attention during the winter of that year. Now the band is following up that LP with their sophomore full-length, No Matter How Narrow, on Dec. 17, and they've said the self-produced record is more concise, more accessible and more light-hearted than its predecessor. If the album's leadoff single, "Spare Key" which you can listen to exclusively in the replies is any indication, that description is spot on. There are still remnants of The Dear Hunter here, but "Spare Key" is purely easy to listen to; it's got strands of Manchester Orchestra's Simple Math sound in the melodies and you can hear a little Listen and Forgive-era Transit in Mason Maggio's vocal performance. If you dig the tune, be sure to keep an eye out for preorder information soon.

This sounds more like a certain full-length released in 2005 but I don't need anyone thieving my comparisons before the AP review goes to print so I'll leave everyone else to guess what.

"The screaming of the wind, because that's all I've ever been" is from Cardinals, isn't it?

wow way different. but way good. sometimes Varuna got to be too dark/moody. hope this is is a nice compromise for my old man ears.
