Target Will Not Sell "Beyoncé"

Posted by: Drew Beringer (12/16/13)
Target will not be selling the latest self-titled album from Beyoncé. Most physical retailers will receive and have the album in stores this Friday, December 20th. In other Beyoncé news, the album sold over 828k worldwide in the iTunes Store in just its first three days and also broke the US first week album sales record with over 617k sold.
"At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections," Target spokesperson Erica Julkowski tells Billboard.

It impacts "sales projections"? ... As it's about to push 800k in 3 days.

Get with the times Target, holding bands and labels hostage is just stupid. People will gladly buy it elsewhere.

It sold 800k online worldwide already. How many more copies is the album really going to sell once it is carried in physical form? Target really does not sell that many CDs to begin with, this being a more well known artist would lead to a lot of copies shipped that just sit on the shelf. This makes sense.

I bet it sells a lot of copies in its physical form. They could order 5 per store if they thought that's all it would sell ... this isn't about not thinking it's going to sell, it's a political move because she released it on iTunes exclusively.

Beyonce remains popular with the baby boomer generation and Generation X, who still prefer physical CDs over digital releases. Outlets such as Target and Wal-Mart still produce high sales for popular mainstream artists because consumers are there purchasing other items and CDs are usually impulse buys. This is a huge mistake on Target's part.
