Year-End Record Sales: Justin Timberlake Nabs...

Posted by: Thomas Nassiff (01/03/14)
Billboard reported year-end SoundScan numbers today, revealing that Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience led the way in 2013 with 2.43 million units sold. The 20/20 Experience is the worst-selling top-selling album in a year since SoundScan began recording data, while 2012's top-selling album (Adele's 21) moved 4.41 million units (not to mention a year-high 5.82 million in 2011 as well). Vinyl record sales continued a trend of improving by double-digit percentage points year-over-year since Record Store Day was invented, with 6.1 million vinyl LPs sold (33% more than 4.55 million in 2012). Robin Thicke took top single honors with "Blurred Lines" garnering 6.5 million downloads in a year that saw digital download sales decline for the first time ever (2013's 1.26 billion songs downloaded is 6% less than 2012's 1.34 billion). Beyonce number is truly astounding, still. Eminem number is really impressive too if you followed the slim amount it decreased each week on the charts, and also the amount it would rise after a fall.

And, I guess that would mean Jay Z sold 2.1 million albums if you count Samsung?

I'm wondering where Fall Out Boy is at in sales for Save Rock & Roll. "Alone Together" seems to be doing very well at radio.

Was surprised that no Drake single cracked the top 10. Was also surprised that Imagine Dragons and Florida Georgia line are both present on both of these lists - where in America are people listening to this Imagine Dragons record?

Interesting that JT sold the most albums but didn't make the top ten singles.

I don't think imagine dragons or FGL left the top 20 on Billboard in a year or so...

neither solo drake single hit number one or seemed to compete with any of these, anecdotally (minus fgl - never even heard of them)

None of his songs off his album were really top 10 singles.
