Great response. It'll be interesting to see what people come up with, who don't agree with what he's saying.

Yeah, the "outcry" or "controversy" surrounding this is pretty ridiculous. Thus is the case for plenty of large televised performances, and any fan of the band should realize this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Perfectly acceptable exception to their usually strong band policy. Besides, it's not as if they played the studio version.

Fantastic. I mean yes I was bummed but how often have any of us seen a live DvD that was clearly over dubbed (Looking at you Killswitch and Saosin). They still put on a heck of a show and the recording sounded great. Also Anthony sounded killer and that was live so there's that.

Makes perfect sense... nobody should doubt this particular band's musical chops.

And as people have said, it was a specifically-recorded live version. Imagine how hilarious it would have been if they used the album version as the backing track.

what the fuck were people expecting? of course it was going to be pre-recorded. obviously, everyone who bitched about this are idiots. i personally don't like the Chili Peppers, but i do have respect for them and Flea wrote a great response. i didn't lose any respect for them over this semi-live performance because i knew that they'd be playing along to a backing track anyway. who cares?

Yup. My buddy was on the USC drumline and played Hey Ya! with OutKast at the Grammys a decade ago. The drumline wasn't miked up at all. The drumming was pre-recorded, they were just there for show.

I'm shocked more people don't realize how that worked. This isn't SNL or Letterman where they have all day to check levels and rehearse.
