Panic! at the Ikea Store?

Posted by - 05:45 PM on 02/20/14
Ikea is discontinuing their Expedit shelves line -- which are fantastic for vinyl collections.
However, the panic, love, and support for IKEA's Expedit could be misplaced. The Swedish firm is planning to replace Expedit with Kallax, an almost identical grid-like shelving unit with thinner sides and rounded edges. Some record collectors are aware of the replacement, but the fear is that the thinner version won’t be sturdy enough to support the hundreds of vinyl that the various 4 x 4 and 5 x 5 Expedit configurations allow.

Pretty happy about this. The new replacements are only going to be better than the current model

I had no idea some of the shelving units had that kind of price tag.

Yep. I mean I only have about 20+ vinyl so they'll do for now. Every time I go into Ikea I end up with what I want and about 200.00 in other bullshit I find along the labyrinth.

Shouldn't this title have been "Panic! at the Discontinuing"?

Actually just grabbed a 2x4 one a few weeks ago. I'm thinking of getting a smaller 2x2 one.

And looking at the old & new model next to each other. What exactly is the difference?

I think it'll be okay. If its not sturdy enough, return it and build your own. I plan on creating an entertainment center to fit my system, tv, and records/books.

Dont worry, there will be a ton of the original expedits around in 5 years when most people have moved on from collecting

Hmm. I've got a 4x4 and two 4x8's setup in my living room for my records. Will suck when I want to add more shelves and I won't be able to. I never knew that these were so universally loved for vinyl. I started shopping around and went to Ikea myself, found the shelves and saw they would work perfectly and bought in to them.

I worked at an ikea for two years. Still one of the best jobs I've ever had.
