I remember my sister convinced me to buy this (mainly because she wanted it and didn't want to pay for it) at a Virgin records store in Dallas, TX. I had never heard of them before, certainly had never heard their songs before, I don't even know how SHE knew who they were at that point.
But man, am I glad I bought this with the 10 dollars I had been surely saving for something special at age 11. "Smile Like You Mean It" and "On Top" basically were the soundtrack to my life for months. "Mr. Brightside" will always be one of my favorite songs, obviously, and then "All These That I've Done" was unlike anything I had heard at that point in my life.
I can look back on that period of time in 2003-2004 and safely say that was like, my musical awakening. So many albums came out and changed everything for me; Futures, Where You Want to Be, North by Something Corporate, Ocean Avenue, etc. Music that I found on my own that spoke to me directly; and while it was my sister's responsibility for introducing this album to me, I consider it a very personal and important piece of my musical history.
