Really Rare Recordings are Now Rare

Posted by - 01:30 PM on 06/10/14
Rex Sorgatz makes an interesting argument that "rare" media no longer exists.
With access to infinite bytes of media, describing a digital object as "rare" sticks out like a lumbering anachronism. YouTube - the official home of lumbering anachronisms - excels at these extraordinarily contradictory moments. Here, for instance, are the Beatles, performing a "VERY RARE" rendition of "Happy Birthday". That sonic obscurity has been heard 2.3 million times. And here is a "Rare Acoustic" version of Slash performing "Sweet Child O' Mine". Over 26 million have devoured this esoteric Axl-less morsel.

Or a bunch of Boards of Canada albums that have yet to surface. You can also throw in "Carnival of Light" by The Beatles or "The Lonely Man of Winter" by Sufjan Stevens where the only way to hear it is by going to some guys house and listening to it on headphones.

Totally forgot about "Carnival of Light". Is Olivia Harrison the only one not giving permission to release it?

I still have a Mayday Parade demo that's yet to see the light of day. It can happen.

It's always cool to see stuff like this presented in a well-thought out way. I'm sure we've all thought about how true this is -- the only music I can't get my hands on is the very early stuff from local bands that are still around.

I have an ep of the band "Defining Moment" that I'm sure is pretty rare. They are one of the bands that broke up and gave members to Mayday.

Yup I have a couple of those songs. Definitely prefer the stuff from Kid Named Chicago though.

The physical format of rare releases are still considered rare. I feel like the more they re-release rare albums the rarer original releases become IMO.
