Max Bemis Has a Message For You

Posted by: Jason Tate (08/05/08)
Max from Say Anything has checked in to talk about his song-shop project and explain a little more why he is doing this.
Message from Max i want to personally thank everyone for the overwhelming response to our new songwriting project. i'm finishing the first orders before we move forward but know i am going to keep at this for a long time so don't worry and keep checking in.

it means SO much that you guys love your songs and it's been so fun and keeps me writing, engaged and playing around in garageband which is awesome! keep emailing and requesting and we'll get back to you in the order you emailed us.

i encourage everyone to keep being as open as they have been because it makes it so fun and easier to do this pretty challenging undertaking. me and my manager are FREAKING OUT. even my mom is FREAKING OUT. this is a crazy new chapter in the say anything-ness and i also want to thank those who got the word out.

not to be a mcboner but to respond to the people curious about my reasons for doing this, here's the deal:

i remember being young and relating to the lyrics of the people i looked up to so much and wished i could meet them or tell them my problems SO BADLY. that may not be you, but then don't buy a song. go do your own thing and keep listening exclusively to hot water music and shut up. since we opened house i have been spending HOURS AND HOURS a day sitting perched in front of my computer, ignoring the world and trying to do my best to address people's problems and write a song that will mean something to them; that they will cherish. it is KINDA hard though it's totally rewarding and i LOVE it. it's no cakewalk and it takes up most of my days since we started it.

in this day and age, everyone downloads music for free. therefore i tried to come up with something where you guys actually pay for something you CAN'T GET ANYWHERE ELSE, that i have to work actually hard to earn the money for. i know i would have bought one when i was growing up if i could have been in this position with chris conley, the singer of saves the day, my favourite band growing up, or rivers cuomo. i'd have even settled for weird al. though the songs ARE sort of expensive, considering how much people in bands charge for a freaking sweatshirt these days it's really not that much and it will certainly pay for the time i spend doing them, and the amount you guys can enjoy them and that they MIGHT hopefully help you.

it is just as much as way for me to be creative and help people as make money. that's why i'm doing it. i could be in a boy band if i wanted to just make money. well i'm kinda fat so it would have to be a terrible boy band. I COULD DO IT THOUGH.

Though i LOVE to tour and write albums, to have that be the only way to relate to people is hard when there are so many possibilities. i don't want to knock our touring life because warped tour has been one of the best things ever (that's a whole other story).i still love playing shows more than anything and would never take that for granted, but anyone in a band can vouch that no matter how cool it is it becomes something you do every single day and i wanted to do something new and fun.

another thing that actually OFFENDS me, which is hard to to these days, are the people who are pissed that musicians make money. the strange, slow, old people on punknews.org and the few annoying stragglers on this website. people who care about us understand this obvious fact: touring all year and being away from our loved ones, sweating our hearts out onstage and living a weird freaking life may not mean we all have to be millionaires, but it's a job that deserves SOME financial compensation, like any other. in this day and age with the industry how it is we have to come up with stuff like this that is actually cool for both us and the listener to be involved with so that we can keep doing what we do. we get almost nothing from record sales and i don't even have too much of a problem with that.however, let us do our best to compensate for it in ways that also benefit the fans, not screw them with higher ticket, merch and record prices. sorry if that offends, you but go hop off a cliff.

as for the rest of you...i can't explain how proud of i am that this worked. we worked SO HARD on it. i promise it will only grow and change and the more you guys give the more i'll give back. this is the start of something supercalifraglisticexpialishmoshish .

you rule!

This is one of the most original promotional ideas from a band. I love it. It's so much better than a bubble.

Glad to hear that he'll be doing this for a long time. Then I'll probably get my song too, yey.

Yes, adult journalists are just like school children too...probably even more so than the real ones.

If this one is as good as I'm thinking it will be, then yeah, probably.

So, if I give them $150 and a paragraph or two about how Big a douche Jason Tate is I can expect a song reflecting such?

Sounds like a reason to open a paypal account to me...

somebody said that on punknews hahahaha.

Haha, punknews comments do get a bit ridiculous...that's why I'm an AP-er mostly even though I love "orgcore" bands.

I think Jonah Matranga used to or still does write personal songs for fans.
