| | What is your name and what do you do in Fireworks?
I'm Chris and I play guitar in Fireworks, although everyone is currently in the control room at the studio, so we'll all be here. They say, "Hi."
What's it like being on Triple Crown? Do you already have relationships with Hit the Lights or any other bands on TCR?
It's great so far. It's nice knowing somebody has your back and at least some confidence in your band. We've been friends with the Hit the Lights dudes before Fireworks was even an idea, and back when Colin played guitar and sang. So it rules having some more attachments to them, it's sort of like when you're best friends end up being in the same class as you in elementary school or something. We've also been friends with Rick Ta Life since he baptized a few of us, so everything makes sense here.
How did the signing come about?
We spent all this time silk screening these awesome press kits and shit, and I think one of the only labels we forgot to send one to was Triple Crown. Somehow in the mix though I believe our friend Joledo gave Fred of Triple Crown our EP and then later some of our new demo's. Then we just kept bothering Fred until he signed us. That's really about it I'd say. What a waste of press kits.
When can we expect some new material?
We are actually at Buzz Bomb Sound Lab with Paul Miner and Chad Gilbert right now. Today's our last day and we're just running through everything and making sure everything is there. We recorded 14 songs and I think 12 will make the record?? I think we're looking towards a March release date, or around there. I'm sure we'll put something new up in a few months so we don't get boring. We're extremely stoked on the record and hope everyone else will receive it the way all of us here do. Paul and Chad rule.
Will "Snap That Chain" be on the new album?
Snap That Chain will be the first single off our full length. It might seem outrageous to think, but we worked on it and changed a few words around to make it more acceptable. Stoked for everyone to hear it.
Are you planning on remaking any of those songs pre-We Are Everywhere that you guys haven't already?
NAH
When can we expect a full length?
I'd like to say I’m sure of a March release, but I’m not. Think around that time, right about the time you're seasonal depression is melting away. A nice little refreshment for post-hibernation.
Are you guys going to change our sound or are you going to stick to
your roots?
We don't really make this decision before we write songs or record them. We usually just come up with some riffs and some melodies and if we like them, they work. I will say that listening to everything that's done so far we've made a nice but smooth progression. Some stuff is more angry, some stuff is more rocking.. I know you've heard that before but it's the truth. Our influences that influenced us from the beginning still influence us to this day though.
What has been the best tour you've been on so far and why?
So hard to say so we really can't answer that directly. Having the chance to spend weeks at a time acting like fools with your friends is amazing. Whether you're doing it with friends from home, across the country, or from Chicago...it's the best. And it can be even more interesting when you've never met the people prior and then you just click or weird them out, either way awesome. Every tour has its ups and downs. Usually the downs are the events you look back on and consider "ups".
How did you guys first meet and get involved with Chad Gilbert?
Chad and us had a few mutual friends and we were both just dying to engage in some sort of activity. Chad started producing records and it was actually Fred's idea to see if he'd be interested in working with us. We've all thought Chad was super hot and New Found Glory was pretty good so we were stoked. We ended up bumping into each other at this bath house in Toronto and decided to go forward. We've never worked with a producer before and the word always scared us, but Chad really did an amazing job and we couldn't be happier. FW <3 CG.
How has the Detroit music scene influenced your sound?
A lot of ways. We all grew up going to hall shows. Like a lot of other places Metro-Detroit had this amazing legion hall scene. Every weekend there was a few shows and each show had about 300 kids. People/Bands like Fordirelifesake, Before I Go, Bottomed Out, Forever
Ending, Short Of First, The Weakend and The Suicide Machines are bands that we would see all the time. They made it seem possible to start a band and such and dudes like Mark Culpepper and anyone else who would book shows for 10+ years really made it happen. Detroit also had shows that had punk rock/hardcore/ska/whatever else you could imagine on one show, so it really made having diversity in music and having all sorts of different tastes not weird at all.
Which do you like better, house shows or venue shows? And why?
Once again, both shows rule. House shows have this awesome aura to them, but I don't think I'd like to play one every night. Venue shows make you sound awesome and stuff is more organized, but after awhile even those can get a little tedious. If Fireworks ever reaches the point of not being able to play houses, we'd be sad. Let's just say that. We're actually about to play our first not house show in Fresno, and we've played amazing houses in Dearborn, MI, Pomona, Ca, St. Louis, MO and so many more. We've had tours where half of them were house shows. I almost don't think houses and venues are comparable, two different worlds.
Are there any plans for more collaboration CDs or anything?
Not as of now but we love the ideas of splits and working with people so who knows about the future. As of now our focus is on our full length and touring.
What Michigan local bands do you really believe in and want to be discovered?
The Swellers, Monument Monument, The Cameo In, We Are The Union, Louder Than Bombs, All Hype, Frank White, Search The City, The Evening Raid, Fuckin Gnarly, Brook Jacoby and Projects, Child Bite, From Hell, The Silence Years, The Bravest Kids, Take Notice, The Word Play. Type all these bands into the search space on My Space and select music. Great bands with even better people. Among bands, people like Chris and Brad at Static Age, Eric at Refuge Skateshop, and Chris and Ramona at Black Iris Booking for doing shows and giving bands a place to play in Metro Detroit deserve a big smooch.
What is one goal you would love to accomplish while being in Fireworks?
Getting to know my best friends more and being able to continue spending countless hours being annoyed with them is probably my number one goal. Also, being able to have people learn a little more about us and where we're from and what we think about shit would rule. Whether they care or not.
What is going on with BeeBooBop? Any update on them?
BeeBooBop is Brett with help from a few friends. I will give him the keyboard... We've just been so busy with Fireworks that we don't have any time to record. "I've got so many songs" just no time. I also plan on recording a new batch of songs around Christmas, and I might start playing some shows. Who knows? So stay tuned and please be patient (for those who care).
Anything else you want to add?
Go to shows, support bands and make friends. Also listen to the song Can't Hardly Wait by The Replacements on repeat....
Check out Fireworks on myspace.
