*All these questions were answered by Keith of Every Time I Die*
How did everyone in ETID meet and how long have you guys been a band?
Well, I met my brother in the hospital ward when my mother gave birth to him and i met the other guys at local shows and ended up getting together and forming the band. We have been a band since 96 and really never imagined it to take us this far.
Is there any significance behind the name Every Time I Die?
Not really, it was just a name that we had came with one day at practice, and we were all young and thought death was cool. If we would known where we would be today we would of probably went with a different name.
The new album Gutter Phenomenon comes out on Aug. 23rd. Are you finished with the recording or are you still working on it?
Its finally done. We just finished it a couple of weeks ago and machine has been hard at work finalizing everything and sending us the songs as they come.
So machine is working on it? He has been doing alot of great work the last couple of years.
He is amazing. Machine was so active in the recording process and was so helpful with making sure that we made an amazing album. He made sure that my vocals were strong and to the best of my abilty. We would be working 14 hours a day and just working us until we were happy.
Is there any significance to the album title?
Yeah, it is actually from a 50's author. I can't think of the exact name right now, i think something like howard bloom. Anyways, he had just talked about how rock n' roll was a gutter phenomenon and how it wasn't going to last. Its just kind of tongue and cheek and funny how rock is always gonna be around.
So, was there anything playing a heavy part in the inspiration of this album?
Mostly pressure to come out with something new. Everyone was waiting for us to come out with something to follow up Hot Damn and we had been on tour for so long that it was hard for us to take time out to write or record. But we finally decided just to take a break from touring for a little bit and just record.
I see that Daryl (Head Automatic/Glassjaw) and Gerard (My Chemical Romance) is doing some guest vocals on the album. What was it like working with them?
Daryl has been friends for some time now. He is really good friends with my roommates so I knew that I could hopefully get him to work with us. He came down and laid down the tracks and it only took him like 3 times so i felt sorry because he hit it perfect and then we had nothing left for him to do.
As for Gerard, we had went out on tour with them along time ago and had kept in touch. He had mentioned that he wanted to work on something with us the next time we recorded, but then they became the next motley crue and i wasn't sure if they wanted to do it, but he got ahold of me and said he would fly home to record with us. Picked him up, Recorded, and it was perfect.
Who did the artwork for the cd cover?
Actually, it was our friends from Toronto. I had been friends with them when i was younger and was interested in having them do it. It made the process alot easier since i knew them from the past and they really listened to what we wanted.
You have to have some crazy tour stories. Anything that you would like to share?
When we were playing at Ozzfest, I was drinking in an area that I wasn't suppose to be I guess and ended up getting dragged off in handcuffs and arrested. I was held in custody for 30 minutes and charged with a thousand dollar fine before I was let go.
What is it like tour with a sibling?
Its awesome, there is honestly no problems or rivalries, we have all been in the band long enough that we know our place in the band.
I am from Omaha and you guys came through like 6 or 7 times in a four month span. Is that something that happens alot when touring all the time?
It happens alot and we are touring so constant that we can't even help it. But its fun. Its also why we needed to record something new so we weren't playing all the same songs and people got interested in coming to see us play.
Well, thats about all the questions I have for you. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer these questions.
thats the most serious interview ive ever read from him, possibly cause it was over the phone and he didnt have time to come up with the witty offbeat answers, but good interview nonetheless.
