Chiodos - 10.10.05

Interviewed by: Brandon Herbel (10/11/05)
01. First off, introduce yourselves and tell us what you do in the band Chiodos.

Craig Owens - Frontman.

02. The name Chiodos is very unique. Its also went through a few changes hasn’t it?

Yeah totally. We used to be called The Chiodos Bros, until we went through a few member changes and decided to go for a little bit harder sound.

03. Is there any significance or story behind the name?

Haha, uhm. No
.

04. The new album "All's Well That Ends Well" just came out a few weeks ago. How does it feel to finally have the album out?

It's actually an amazing feeling. We're glad to have something out that represents the sound that we're going for. Not to mention the fact that it was released on an amazing record label(equal vision).

05. The artwork for the cd is amazing, who did the artwork?

Thanks! The art was done by Paul Romano who has also done art for tons of other more metal bands in the past. I had personally been a big fan of his other work for a while, and was really stoked when he decided to do ours.

06. What was the recording process like for the whole album?

The process itself was an awesome one. Working with someone from home Flint native Marc Hudson was a great experience, and we all learned a lot about ourselves and the music that we make.

07. When you guys were recording, what was the inspiration of the whole writing process and did you guys experience any problems writing?

We hardly have any problems with writing. We love what we do and we know what we want to come across to listeners.

08. So, the word on the streets is that Craig is going to be a part of the next Sounds Of Animals Fighting CD. Is that true or can we clear up some rumors?

It is very true. I definately sang on some of the new album. Honestly, the new album sounds a lot different but it is seriously soooo amazing. I feel very privileged to be a part of somethinng so great.

09. I just saw your video the other day and you guys all look rather young. How old are you guys and what kind of musical influences did you have growing up?

We are 19 - 23. We all had very different musical influences growing up. Personally, I just turned 21.
Growing up I listened to everything from Warren G - Regulators to Weezer - The Blue Album

10. Is there any albums that you don’t think you could live without?

I totally feel this way about a lot of albums. If I had to choose one though, it would definately be Saves The Day - Through Being Cool.

11. If I was to go into the tour bus and look in your cd player/ipod, what kind of music would I find?

All different types. Collectively the new Kanye for sure.

12. You guys have just recently signed with Equal Vision. How did you guys get hooked up with that?

Well a rep from EVR and now one of my best friends Angel Juarbe had contacted us. We'd been talking with other labels, but once EVR contacted us there was no question of who to go with.

13. Was there any other labels showing interest at the time?

Yeah, there definately was. Mostly majors, and we knew that wasn't something that we were ready as musicians or people to take on. In fact I'm not sure if we would ever be ready to do something like that.

14. Are we going to be expecting any big tour plans for you guys in the next few months?

Definately! Just keep listening to rumors and eventually one of them will turn into fact.

15. Speaking of tours, are there any really crazy tour stories or any really memorable moments?

Haha, totally. On this last tour after one of our shows in NY with The Fall Of Troy and Transistor Transistor there were two bums sitting outside in front of about 50 kids. One bum was sitting down and the other standing over him. The one sitting down took a hit of crack while the other broke a bottle over his head for a matter of about 20 dollars. Then after the money was given and the kids had gone. The bum standing up hit the one that was given the money and took it!

16. Where do you guys see yourself in 5 years?

Still writing music. We dont plan to ever go away.

17. If there was something you could change in the music scene, what type of stuff would that be?

All of these scenesters making it uncomfortable for regular kids to come out to shows. The fact that all boys now look like girls and all girls now look like boys. Also, I think that a lot of people in the scene forget that music is a personal preference and that everyone is entitled to there owns tastes. No matter who/what they may be.

18. What are your thoughts on album leaking?

I think its definately lame. So many publications(not going to say any names, cough) encourage stealing directly out of the pocket of the musician that they 'enjoy'. On a more individual basis, when kids tell me that they downloaded our album, I tell them 'Thanks for the support, but they might as well have just taken the food right out of my mouth'.

19. Well, that’s about all the questions I have for you guys, thank you for taking the time out to sit down and do the interview. Is there anything you would like to say to all the readers and fans out there in absolutepunk.net land?

Everyone buy the new Portugal. The Man record when it comes out early next year, its seriously soooo amazing. You wont be dissapointed. Also, listen to The Weakend, and Anathallo.

I always just assumed they got their name from The Chiodos Brothers that made such movies as Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I figured it was too much of a coincidence.
