i wonder whatever became of the video for "boxer". and i think at one point they mentioned completing one for "diamond street church choir" too. hmm.

I still maintain that Diamond Church Street Choir should have been the first single. It could be a hit.

yea that band would suck haha

Brian's parts at least would be great. Unless the dude from TBS was John, then it would probably be pretty good all around, if a little odd.

Hm, okay. I actually really like the art, but whatever. The album's one of my favorites of the last ten years though, hands down.

Haha, cause all their hands are up.

^^ If that album cover

and this album cover

had sex, it'd be this album cover:

I've noticed the similarity between the EITS and Stars covers before, but I never thought about how that hand looks like the one on Heaven Is Whenever. That's awesome.

Threads go to 10k now

Oh, cool. I guess that's why the old What Are You Listening To thread hasn't been archived.

I hope the "dirty, dirty Southern rock song" is Biloxi Parish. At the very least, I hope that one makes the record.

After a few listens, at least, I think I agree with this. National Anthem is the only song I haven't really connected with, but obviously I've only had the record for a day.

Would you mind explaining that point a little bit more? Not sure I see him writing the same songs over and over again.

I can definitely see that being a criticism of his lyrics, which, while great, don't have the widest thematic variety. That doesn't bother me personally though. As a musician, however, it's almost astounding to hear how much they use the VI-IV-I-V chord progression (the first part of the chorus of "45," for instance), and, on Handwritten at least, how often it's in the key of Bb. I guess it's comfortable and sort of their trademark at this point, and it's definitely not something that turns me off from listening to them, but as a criticism, it certainly has some basis.

Biloxi Parish has to be my favorite TGA song yet, so fuckin' good.

I think I agree. That guitar riff is incredible.

I finally got my vinyl today. I like that they put a picture of Ian Perkins on the inside of the jacket where the record goes

It's hidden behind a black CD tray on the CD version.

Great words as always. Ad the actual full band version I've just watched sounds good too. But all the tracks I see him play acoustically are the exact same chord progression.

There is a certain chord progression (vi-IV-I-V (Em-C-G-D, for example) if you know a little music theory) that I consistently think of as "The Gaslight Anthem Progression" because it shows up in at least half of their songs, if not more. Brian always sings great melodies over it, but it really is all over their music.

Haha glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed this. Saves the Day also loves the vi-IV-I-V chord progression, and often uses the Em-C-G-D progression you mentioned. Not as bad as blink though...I think more of their songs are I-V-vi-IV than not haha

I can't hear that I-V-vi-IV progression without playing the riff from "Dammit" over it in my head.
