I loved and defended Zwan, and I loved and defended the reunion and Zeitgeist - because although James and D'arcy were essentially studio musicians, Jimmy was a core part of the sound.
This is my favorite band of all time, and it kills me to say it, but without Jimmy it is NOT the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy has the right to call it what he wants, but it's the Billy Corgan solo project to me now. Nothing more, nothing less. Jimmy's drumming style is too big a part of what makes a Billy Corgan song become a Pumpkins song.
I'm glad you can argue something as subjective as "greatest songwriter".
No, nothing's subjective.
That's just a word made up by the sucky to make fellow suckies feel like there is a plausible reason to exist. Also to take refuge when being struck by those with actual taste.
Gish, Siamese Dream, Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness, and Machina (arguably) are fantastic. There ARE five or so songs in their catalog that could be argued for in the case for some of the best rock songs of the 90's. At least that's how I feel.
Good reason to leave, Jimmy. It takes serious guts to admit that your own commitment level - not a different band member's - isn't as high as it needs to be. It's a shame because he's a fantastic drummer, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do when ya gotta do it.
As much as I enjoyed seeing them live in 07, I think it's time for the Pumpkins to stop. Zeitgeist onward has been so mediocre... They had it in the 90s, but they've lost it since.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Siamese Dream are among my top 10 favorite albums of all time :)
