Asian Man Records is one of the most respected labels run by quite possibly one of the nicest guys around, Mike Park. Mike Park has created a label that has produced some well known acts such as The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, and Big D and the Kids Table. Along with creating this label, Mike Park has done some amazing solo work and has been in bands like Skankin’ Pickle, The Bruce Lee band, and The Chinkees. Joining him in The Chinkees is a man named Jason Thinh and he is also the front man for a pop/punk band called Short Round.
Now, when I first heard about Short Round it was from an awesome opportunity I got when my band got to play with them at a small coffee house here in Illinois. After the show I got the chance to just sit around and bullshit with some of the nicest guys and I heard that they were here in Chicago recording their debut for Asian Man with none other then Brendan Kelly from The Lawrence Arms. Needless to say when this album was released I had to check it out and I must say with Language they did an awesome job. Short Round’s Language is a very raw CD that captures the group’s live performance rather than an overproduced sound. The best comparison I can give to their music would be that their style is very similar to the Alkaline Trio’s blend of pop/punk.
Their opening track on Language is “The Alcohol Talking,” a very well written pop/punk song that is hands down my favorite track on the album. Other tracks like “Assumptions,” “Cleansing, Cut, and Scrape,” “Hide and Seek,” and “Molehill” are just a few of the others that stand out on this 10 song debut. Overall, this is one of the many albums out there that might not be well known or recognized but definitely deserves the listen. Not only are these guys some of the nicest musicians I’ve gotten a chance to talk to but they also have put out a very solid album on one of the hardest working labels around. ** 7/10 **
