Hope everyone had a great holiday and is starting off 2014 on the right foot. Pretty sure I've already broken most of my resolutions. The "holiday theme" has been retired for another year, I know, sad day. Anyway, we will be releasing a whole bunch of staff and band/label "best of 2013" lists early next week when everyone's champagne and egg-nog hangovers are subsiding and the rest of the music industry starts coming out of hibernation as well.
Jason Tate on 01/02/14 - 12:20 PM
Just want to wish everyone a Happy New Years! Thanks to every reader for a great 2013 and every staff member for everything you do on a daily basis. Please be safe tonight guys -- don't drink and drive -- and start off 2014 with something loud and musical.

As 2013 comes to a close I wanted to take a look at what the biggest stories of the year were here on AP.net. It's been a pretty crazy year for music news ... but it seems no story was bigger than the viral Shone campaign. The top 10 are below, were you here for them all?

1) Shone Viral Campaign
2) Fall Out Boy Announce New Album + Song
3) Mayday Parade Chat
4) 2013 Top 30 Albums by Staff
5) 55th Grammy Award Open Thread
6) The Wonder Years Song + Chat
7) 86th Academy Awards Open Thread
8) For Today's Guitarist Says "No Gay Christians"
9) Fall Out Boy Release "The Phoenix"
10) Chat with William Beckett

Only a day or so left of 2013. Well, that certainly went by quickly. On the 6th we will be posting all of our individual staff lists for the best albums of the year (still a little bit longer of that weird lull that hits the music industry) but then we'll be hitting the new year hard. So, this is the last reminder that if you're in a band, work for a label, or are involved in the industry -- we want to feature your favorite albums of the year in our end of the year database. We've made it super simple again this year: just email us your lists to this address and make sure you make it clear who the list is for (if you're in a band, is it a band list, or is it an individual band member...

This is that time of year where everything starts slowing down in the music industry and online. We'll still be keeping things updated around here through the new year -- but it'll probably be a little slower than usual. I just wanted to take a few moments to thank everyone for reading the website throughout 2013, and that we here at AP.net wish you all a happy holidays.
Jason Tate on 12/23/13 - 01:14 PM
I made a playlist from the AP.net staff's "best of 2013" list on Rdio, so if you haven't checked out all the albums yet -- now you can.
Jason Tate on 12/18/13 - 10:43 AM
The staff are almost done compiling our site-wide list, but we still want label/band/industry people lists! If you're in a band, work for a label, or are involved in the industry -- we want to feature your favorite albums of the year in our end of the year database. We've made it super simple again this year: just email us your lists to this address and make sure you make it clear who the list is for (if you're in a band, is it a band list, or is it an individual band member list? If you work at a record label, what label?). We'll be compiling everything together and post it all around the new year with the official AP.net staff lists as well.

It's already almost Thanksgiving, where the hell did this year go? Saturday Night Live will always be something I look forward to watching every week. Every season I always look forward to what musical guests Lorne Michaels and company are going to book. Last week, Arcade Fire kicked off the 39th season, while Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry are booked for this week and next. SNL does a fairly decent job of mixing in established bands with up-and-coming bands throughout a season. What follows in the replies is my wish list for artists I hope to see grace the SNL stage this year along with what songs I'd like to see played. After you check out my list, make sure to add in what bands you'd like to see this season.

In this week's AbsolutePunk.net Podcast, Jason calls up and Zack from PropertyOfZack to talk about the state of blogs and what it’s like when you make a lot of changes. Do users rebel? Are people ready for the next AP.net?

Earlier this week, Tim Kasher released the first single from his upcoming album, Adult Film. Kasher is, of course, better known as the leader of Cursive and while I love that band, I've always preferred his solo work. So that's the inspiration for this week's discussion leading into the holiday weekend. In what cases do you prefer a side project or solo effort over the more-known or popular full band act? Do you prefer The Eraser over anything in Radiohead? Is Desaparecidos the superior Conor Oberst product? Are you a Horrible Crowes fan or do you stick by The Gaslight Anthem? Let us know in the replies.

You smell that? That's the promise of autumn - brisk wind, leaves falling, and hot cider. It's my favorite time of year so I'm especially ecstatic that 2013 saved some of the very best releases for the coming Fall months. A handful of staff members put their brains together to put out a small list of the albums we can't wait to hear. Check it out in the replies and let us know what we got right, wrong, and what your personal list would look like.

It seems like the mid-year articles and lists arrive faster and faster each year. The first six months of 2013 brought listeners enough great albums to fill up an end of the year list, so it's somewhat overwhelming yet incredibly exciting that we have six more months of fantastic releases to look forward to. As for now, we'll put a bow on the first 181 days of the year by releasing our ten favorites thus far as well as individual lists from our staff. And to go along with this, we've released episode five of the AbsolutePunk Podcast. Jason and I talk about our favorite albums so far and look forward to what the rest of the year has in store. You can check out the podcast here and...
