Today I learned that sometime a long time ago -- English critic and writer Leigh Hunt was quoted as saying, "music is the medicine of the breaking heart" -- I'm hoping his estate doesn't read music blogs.

I'm out of town for the weekend, so there won't be an episode of the AbsolutePunk Podcast coming today. Good time to catch up on all our past episodes though. Next week we plan to talk about the review process (especially negative reviews), and we'll probably also touch on the whole vinyl re-pressing shenanigan stuff.

Welp, the website tried to become self-aware this morning -- sorry about that. Fixed the bug in the software. So, hey, speaking of advertising: Japanese beverage maker Otsuka is sending a 1 kilogram titanium can filled with powdered sports drink to the moon.
The specially designed canister, which contains a shipment of Otsuka's Pocari Sweat powder, will mark a disturbing new frontier for humanity: the first commercial product delivered to another world for marketing purposes.

The AbsolutePunk Podcast now has its own page here on the website (you can also find it on the footer of any page). If you're looking for the latest episode or want to send someone to a page to check out our podcast -- now you can. Also, this is a good time to ask for you to rate our podcast in iTunes if you have a spare moment. It actually does help get us some promotion on the iTunes store -- so we would really appreciate it! Thank you. Hope you're all enjoying, if you have any feedback, feel free to leave it for us in the replies.

This week on the AbsolutePunk.net Podcast, Zack and I sat down with Nate Dorough from Fusion Shows to talk some insider baseball about putting on shows, booking festivals, a whole lot of Brand New stuff (weird how many of my conversations somehow come back to this), and why Fusion Shows doesn't charge any services fees on tickets for their shows. We also talk a lot about Bled Fest, which is coming up in Michigan on May 24th. The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded in the replies.

Some sections of the website are going to start getting a little "lipstick on the pig" updates -- the first being our interview section. The new format can be checked out here and here, if you find any bugs or issues please let me know (including browser and operating system helps a ton).

Emo is "back" and everyone has an opinion on it. On this week's episode of the AbsolutePunk.net Podcast we are joined by staffer Thomas Nassiff to talk about emo's return, the internet/fan backlash, the state and future of music online, the internet, "troll bands," and quite a bit more. The conversation is casual and the drinks were flowing. The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded in the replies.

Weird announcement to have to make ... but, I just got word that a certain vodka company didn't like the name "ABSOLUTExclusive" and so we're going to have to change it. Seriously. I think it's hilariously stupid, but ... not my call. I spent a few seconds debating if we should just go with something like "GREYGOOSExclusives" or maybe go with a whiskey brand? Since it's obviously alcohol related. Maybe all go buy these shirts in protest? In the end I talked to staff and we decided to just call the section "exclusives." So, we'll be making those changes shortly where we can and I'll be buying my vodka from companies that don't have more money and lawyers than common sense.

Check ... check ... is this thing on? The AbsolutePunk.net Podcast has returned. This week brings Joseph Marro stopping by to talk about the early years of The Early November, his time in Hellogoodbye, and his current adventures managing bands like You Blew It. Life in a band isn't always like it's made out to be in the movies. The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded in the replies -- and oh how we're glad to be back!

We had a minor error on our news submission page that was making it look like you had to log-in to submit news -- sorry about that -- all fixed now. So, feel free to send in your news tips (anonymously or not). I know there are still a few things not quite working on the website (and the slowness on posting and editing still seems to creep up every now and again), but we're getting closer.

Well, if you're not busy discussing if Record Store Day has been ruined, there are some cool releases coming out. Plus, I say getting outside to visit your local record store with some friends is as good an excuse as any (vinyl and beer is the secret to long living). We've created this open thread to discuss all the releases for this year. We'll keep it open throughout the weekend to post about what you've found and picked up and/or share any other deals that show up. Check the first post for some thoughts from staff on what they're looking to grab this year.

We're aware of some of the wonky bugs going on with the website at the moment. I think I've figured out and am aware of most of them -- but if you come across something could you let me know in the replies (or if the site's not working to post on Twitter)? Sorry for the inconvenience we are definitely trying to get everything sorted out. This is why I drink.

There will be scheduled maintenance on the AP.net database and servers tonight at 10pm (PST). It should take about two hours and the site may be unusable or down during the process. Sorry for any inconvenience.

It's the most wonderful time of the year: March Madness! We've got our official bracket challenge group up (winners get prizes, of course), and the discussion thread in the sports forum is made. On Wisconsin!

What albums would you call "AP.net classics"? The albums that when you hear you think of this website?
Jason Tate on 03/04/14 - 04:48 PM
Read an interview with our own Drew Beringer about vinyl collecting and records on Now Spinning.
My older cousin gave me a copy of Rage Against The Machine’s debut album and then my first purchase on my own was Weezer’s Blue Album. From then on through all levels of schooling (middle, high, college) any extra income I got from my part-time or summer jobs went to buying music. Still does!

The results are in for our Most Anticipated of 2014 (Reader's Poll Edition) and I don't think many of you will be surprised at the results. All in all, we had thousands of votes and we tallied up the top 30 band's you're anticipating new music from this year. Check it out in the replies. Thanks again for participating!

It's podcast Friday! Today's episode has Drew, Zack, and I talking about our most anticipated albums of the year. Or that's what the premise was until we kind of just started talking about music and anticipating being let down by music. Bonus: Drew's one true love, 30 Seconds to Mars, is revealed ... and I piss off a good portion of our listeners by trashing on their favorite bands. The episode comes on the heels of our "most anticipated" feature, as well as right before we announce the results of the reader poll for your most anticipated albums of the year (there's still time to vote). The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded in the replies. Also, Drew and Zack are getting new...

Jason Tate on 01/20/14 - 11:09 AM
This week on the AbsolutePunk.net Podcast, Drew and I get together to talk about the new albums from Against Me! and The Lawrence Arms. Both albums are releasing at the end of this month and they're both albums we think you should listen to and spend some time with. Why do we love them? Listen to the podcast to find out. The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded in the replies.

Earlier this week we posted the staff's Most Anticipated Albums of 2014 feature ... now it's your turn. We want to know what you are anticipating most this year -- so if you could fill out this quick reader poll, we will be compiling the top submissions into a AP.net reader's most anticipated albums of the year feature.

We are still reveling in the past over here, and it's time to spotlight some more lists from our earth-shattering Best of 2013 feature. Today I beg of you but also demand you check out the lists of the British mastermind himself Andy Biddulph and the staff's relative new guy Anthony Sorendino - Andy has loud on lock while Anthony is more of a wonderful mixed scene bag. And for some diversity, check out Brian Warren of Weatherbox's list and the gang from one of our favorite labels of the last one million years, Epitaph Records. Are you excited from looking at all of these lists? Has your Spotify overheated? Whoops!
Blake Solomon on 01/15/14 - 07:53 AM
Moving right along with highlighting lists from our Best of 2013 feature, today we're showing off our own mysterious leader Jason Tate's list, because even though he is in charge we somehow haven't done that yet, along with those of awe-inspiring staff members Scott Weber and Alex DiVincenzo. I have worked with Alex for three years and have never not copy/pasted his last name when writing it. We're also bragging about the fact that cool industry insiders like Fred Feldman (Triple Crown owner), Jesse Cannon (producer and author) and Jamie Coletta (SideOneDummy publicist) contributed their favorite picks from 2013 as well. Enjoy and remember, nothing you did last year counted unless you...
Thomas Nassiff on 01/14/14 - 10:17 AM
By now you've probably had your fill with all of the "End of the Year" lists and whatnot, so naturally it's time to transition into what albums we're anticipating the most in 2014. I feel like this year's edition came a little bit earlier than usual, which is great because our list features over 80 prospective releases spanning over a wide array of different genres. Twelve months from now we'll see how well we did with our picks, but until then you should head on over into the replies and check out which albums we're excited for and why. As always, we welcome your own picks and discussion. Enjoy.
Drew Beringer on 01/13/14 - 07:41 AM
Continuing on with highlighting some of our individual Best of 2013 lists, today we're bringing you lists from staff members Thomas Nassiff, Kyle Huntington, and myself. We're also showing off industry lists from O'brother and Greg Dunn of Moving Mountains. There should be no shortage of new music to check out here, so start your Saturday off right with some albums you may have missed from 2013.
Jake Jenkins on 01/11/14 - 10:54 AM
To continue our Best of 2013 highlights, today's staff lists include Keagan Ilvonen, Zac Djamoos, and myself. The industry lists come from Equal Vision Records / Rory Records Bands and Joseph Marro of The Early November. Be on the look out for more featured lists throughout the upcoming days.
Ryan Gardner on 01/10/14 - 08:26 AM
To continue our Best of 2013 highlights, today we're showing off my list, known affectionately as "Pitchfork Lite," Jack Appleby's, and Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. Check back tomorrow for more staff and industry lists you may have missed.
Ryan Dennehy on 01/09/14 - 07:14 AM
Just as Drew stated yesterday, we will be taking the next week or so to highlight individual lists from our final Best Music of 2013 feature. Today, we're all about the letter C, so check out lists from esteemed staff members Cody Nelson, Chris Collum, and myself, and uncover a few great records that you may have missed last year.
Craig Manning on 01/08/14 - 07:05 AM
Over the next couple of days we will be highlighting specific individual lists from our final Best of 2013 feature. Today, we're showcasing the stellar lists from staff members Deborah Remus and Blake Solomon, along with my very own perfect list.
Drew Beringer on 01/07/14 - 02:43 PM
Hope everyone had a great holiday and is starting off 2014 on the right foot. Pretty sure I've already broken most of my resolutions. The "holiday theme" has been retired for another year, I know, sad day. Anyway, we will be releasing a whole bunch of staff and band/label "best of 2013" lists early next week when everyone's champagne and egg-nog hangovers are subsiding and the rest of the music industry starts coming out of hibernation as well.
Jason Tate on 01/02/14 - 01:20 PM
Just want to wish everyone a Happy New Years! Thanks to every reader for a great 2013 and every staff member for everything you do on a daily basis. Please be safe tonight guys -- don't drink and drive -- and start off 2014 with something loud and musical.
Jason Tate on 12/31/13 - 02:06 PM
As 2013 comes to a close I wanted to take a look at what the biggest stories of the year were here on AP.net. It's been a pretty crazy year for music news ... but it seems no story was bigger than the viral Shone campaign. The top 10 are below, were you here for them all?

1) Shone Viral Campaign
2) Fall Out Boy Announce New Album + Song
3) Mayday Parade Chat
4) 2013 Top 30 Albums by Staff
5) 55th Grammy Award Open Thread
6) The Wonder Years Song + Chat
7) 86th Academy Awards Open Thread
8) For Today's Guitarist Says "No Gay Christians"
9) Fall Out Boy Release "The Phoenix"
10) Chat with William Beckett

Only a day or so left of 2013. Well, that certainly went by quickly. On the 6th we will be posting all of our individual staff lists for the best albums of the year (still a little bit longer of that weird lull that hits the music industry) but then we'll be hitting the new year hard. So, this is the last reminder that if you're in a band, work for a label, or are involved in the industry -- we want to feature your favorite albums of the year in our end of the year database. We've made it super simple again this year: just email us your lists to this address and make sure you make it clear who the list is for (if you're in a band, is it a band list, or is it an individual band member...

This is that time of year where everything starts slowing down in the music industry and online. We'll still be keeping things updated around here through the new year -- but it'll probably be a little slower than usual. I just wanted to take a few moments to thank everyone for reading the website throughout 2013, and that we here at AP.net wish you all a happy holidays.
Jason Tate on 12/23/13 - 02:14 PM
