Techcrunch is reporting that Apple plans to shut down Beats Music.
Many engineers from Beats Music have already been moved off the product and onto other projects at Apple, including iTunes. It’s not clear when exactly Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre’s music service will be shut down or what Apple will do with streaming, but every source with knowledge of the situation that we talked to agreed Apple plans to sunset the Beats Music brand.

Update: Some more reporting from Re/Code calls into question the Techcrunch story.
Tom Neumayr says the TechCrunch story is “not true”, but wouldn’t elaborate. I can elaborate a bit more, based on conversations with people familiar with Apple’s thinking:...

If you want to remove U2's album Songs of Innocence from your iTunes collection -- this is how you do it.
Once the album has been removed from your account, it will no longer be available for you to redownload as a previous purchase. If you later decide you want the album, you will need to get it again. The album is free to everyone until October 13, 2014, and will be available for purchase after that date.

Apple is reportedly in talks to buy Beats Audio. Crappy software, crappy headphones. Hope this is for more than just the IP.
Apple is reportedly in the process of buying Beats for $3.2 billion, according to a new report from The Financial Times. The deal includes both the streaming music service, as well as the company that produces headphones and speakers. The move, which would be Apple’s largest acquisition, could be announced as soon as next week, the paper says.

Apple's iTunes festival will be run side-by-side with SXSW.
The music extravaganza will be held in Austin from March 11th through the 15th, running alongside South by Southwest (SXSW). It's a much shorter run than in the past, but it will include a mix of well-known American and European artists

A pretty cool new app called Keezy was released today.
It's a deceptively simple app. You have eight buttons, each of which can record a short sound clip. To create a clip you sing, scream, beatbox and spit into your iPhone's microphone. You mix and match the samples over one another, using the loops like a drum machine to create killer beats and melodies. A slider on-screen allows you to delete or undo individual clips.

Al Morris (Murphy's Law and Unholy Alliance) has created an iPhone app called "Mosh Pit."
Mosh Pit is a bit of mix of game, music platform and a virtual world entertainment device. The game angle is you set off your characters to create a 'total mosh'; meaning you get your 'moshnoids' to complete their routines which include stage diving, crowd surfing, jump in, circle pit, wall to wall as I call it, then finally a quick free style before jumping out.

Apple has announced that music fans have purchased and downloaded more than 25 billion songs from the iTunes Store. Kind of related: yesterday I was trying to find stats about iTunes charts when I was writing up this commentary, and found this cool site that lets you search for songs that have been on the charts and get all kinds of information about them.

The Wall Street Journal reported recently that Apple is in talks to license music with the intention of creating an online music streaming platform that would be targeted to compete with Pandora. In fact, Pandora, which recently became a publicly traded company, has seen its shares fall a pretty significant amount over the past week as the rumor about Apple's involvement in the online radio market has spread.

Any rumor about Apple playing a new hand in the music industry has to be taken seriously, which explains the reflex reaction of Pandora's stock drop. Apple already has what amounts to the world's largest record store in the form of iTunes, which sells more music than any other...

I am trying to decide if this new "vinyl tap" app for the iPad is the dumbest - or coolest - thing I've seen in a while. I feel like there's no middle ground. Basically, it takes your music library ... and makes it seem like you're playing it on a record player. On your iPad? I ... yeah, I dunno.
