The Beastie Boys have won $1.7 million in their trial against Monster Beverage Corp.
The Beastie Boys had sought up to $2.5 million for copyright infringement and false endorsement. Monster countered that it owed no more than $125,000, calling the case "illogical" and saying an employee had mistakenly believed the company had permission to use the music.

Monster Energy Drink has released a statement as their trial with Beastie Boys begins in court this week.
Monster has no intention of litigating this matter in the media, but since the case has now received publicity we felt we should let the public know the facts as we see them. Monster in good faith believed it had obtained the rights to use a compilation of certain Beastie Boys music for an Internet video. The video recounted a snowboarding event in Canada that Monster sponsored where the after party featured many Beastie Boys songs played by the DJs in honor of the recent death of one of the Beastie Boys’ members. The music that Monster used was provided by one of the DJs [Z-Trip],...

The Beastie Boys finally settled their lawsuit with GoldieBlox (the toy company that parodied their song "Girls" in a viral ad).
The settlement will include an apology from GoldieBlox, to be displayed on the company's website, as well as donation by GoldieBlox to charities selected by the Beastie Boys that encourage science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for girls.

When GoldieBlox pulled the parody of the Beastie Boys' song "Girls" from their toy commercial, I thought that would be the end of it. I was wrong. The Beastie Boys have now sued the toymaker for copyright and trademark infringement and demanded a jury trial.

GoldieBlox has pulled their "Girls" ad and written an open letter to the Beastie Boys, which can be found below.
We don’t want to fight with you. We love you and we are actually huge fans.

When we made our parody version of your song, “Girls”, we did it with the best of intentions. We wanted to take a song we weren’t too proud of, and transform it into a powerful anthem for girls. Over the past week, parents have sent us pictures and videos of their kids singing the new lyrics with pride, building their own Rube Goldberg machines in their living rooms and declaring an interest in engineering. It’s been incredible to watch.

Our hearts sank last week when your lawyers called us with...

I made a comment in the news post about the Beastie Boys' song "Girls" being used in a pretty awesome commercial, that it was one of the rare times the band has allowed this to happen. Looks like I spoke too soon. According to a lawsuit filed by Goldieblox, "the Beastie Boys have now threatened GoldieBlox with copyright infringement. Lawyers for the Beastie Boys claim that the GoldieBlox Girls Parody Video is a copyright infringement, is not a fair use and that GoldieBlox's unauthorized use of the Beastie Boys intellectual property is a 'big problem' that has a 'very significant impact.'"
Is that "fair use"? To answer the question, a judge will be looking at the four factors of fair...

Rolling Stone has posted an interview with Michael 'Mike D' Diamond of the Beastie Boys discussing Adam Yauch's life and his last few weeks. Included in the interview is the fact that Yauch recorded new music with the band last fall.
From the ArticleAdam instigated it. It could only come from him, in terms of where he was at with treatment. It was stuff we had written or demo-ed, and there were new ideas. He wasn't sure he was able to do vocals. But after a bit, we ended up doing them. And he was fine. It was a way for him to say, "Yeah, I'm doing it."

Mike D.'s StatementI know, we should have tweeted and instagrammed every sad, happy and inspired thought, smile or tear by now. But honestly the last few days have just been a blur of deep emotions for our closest friend, band mate and really brother. I miss Adam so much. He really served as a great example for myself and so many of what determination, faith, focus, and humility coupled with a sense of humor can accomplish. The world is in need of many more like him. We love you Adam. BTW this photo sent to me by a friend, (thanks Saslow) is...

This past Friday, the music scene as a whole lost a true visionary, activist, and legend in Adam "MCA" Yauch, one of the co-founders of Beastie Boys. I wrote a small afterword on the hip-hop pioneer in my blog, as well as created a playlist of some of my favorite Beastie tracks. This is the place to share your favorite videos, songs, and memories from the genre-defining hip-hop trio.
