Billboard and Twitter have teamed up to present the "real-time charts" to track the most popular music being shared on the social network.
The first is Billboard Trending 140, which compares the frequency a song is shared over the past hour with the hourly average of shares in the last day. The second is Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists, which ranks songs from artists with less than 50,000 Twitter followers by the volume of shares in a 24-hour period. There will also be weekly summaries showing the most popular tracks on Twitter during that time span.

Head to Billboard to read an article on Rise Records' "Unlikely, Exponential Success."
“I think illegal downloading actually helped us 10 years ago because fans would spread the word to people who would later support the bands,” says Ericson. “We’ve been aggressive about getting our music out there where it can be heard hassle-free.”

New Found Glory spoke with Billboard about remaining a four-piece and their plans to release a new album before a fall tour later this year.
"There was never any thought, nor will there be any thought or consideration to ever have a fifth member. It's always going to be the four of us. As far as live, we're figuring it out, but we like it better than having an extra person. It's definitely easier to worry about us four than trying to find someone."

This letter from the editor recently posted by Billboard's Bill Werde is a great read. It addresses, amongst other things, how many in the media don't know how to cover music in general if there's no controversy.
And our conversation basically amounted to: “It was boring because nothing controversial happened.” He expected to shrink coverage of the AMAs. Before I went to sleep that night, I was told that none of the shows planning longer segments would be doing them. It's a sign of the times that celebrity trumps actual culture on TV. If Miley Cyrus cavorts with a foam finger, I’m a talking head on the topic for the next three months. If she does a superb job singing a great song like...

Beyoncé's new self-titled record sold more than 430k in its first day of release and is projected to sell more than 600k (all digital, of course) and debut at #1 on the Billboard. Remember that the record was released this past Friday, so that's 600k+ in four day span. For comparison, her first day numbers outsold Katy Perry’s Prism (286k in its first week), Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP (258k), Miley Cyrus' Bangerz (270k), and Kanye West's Yeezus (327k), while her total first week will outsell her husband's (Jay Z) first week output with Magna Carta Holy Grail (528k). Basically, holy crap. It'll be interesting to see what her Friday-Thursday total is - I wonder if Beyoncé could have been the...

“There are going to be a couple of guests,” singer Patrick Stump said, opting to keep his lips sealed on the specifics. “I think we're going to keep mum about it for now.” Bassist Pete Wentz explained that though they’ve finished their album, there’s still some paperwork and signatures that have to be signed before clearing the featured guests. “Those are the last things that we're working out,” Pete said. “I don't think all of the contracts have been signed yet. But I will say that if people are excited about the 2 Chainz idea, there's more exciting stuff.”
