GameStop has swooped in to buy Geeknet (the company that owns ThinkGeek) on the heels of the company finalizing a deal with Hot Topic.
Geeknet terminated a previous agreement to be bought by Hot Topic Inc., and GameStop will reimburse Geeknet for the breakup free associated with that deal, the companies said Tuesday in a statement. The Hot Topic bid had a $122 million equity value. The acquisition combines GameStop’s 6,600 stores with a retailer that sold $140.7 million of geek-chic merchandise last year, mostly through its ThinkGeek website. GameStop is betting that ThinkGeek’s offerings, which include “World of Warcraft” pint glasses and “Mass Effect” hoodies, will be an easy sell to...
Online geek-y retailer ThinkGeek and its parent company Geeknet Inc. are in the process of being acquired by Hot Topic, a popular mall-based retailer best known for selling vampire T-shirts and other faux-goth-pop accoutrements. According to a press release issued this morning, Hot Topic will be picking up all of Geeknet’s outstanding shares of common stock for $17.50 per share, and the company will also be fronting about $37 million in cash. The total value of the transaction will be $122 million.
The latest designs from Amerrickan, the "lifestyle clothing company from the creative mind of All Time Low bassist Zack Merrick," are available now via Hot Topic and for a limited time include a signed poster with proof of purchase.
Hot Topic will be pressing some soundtracks from Disney movies to vinyl picture discs. The first two are The Lion King and The Little Mermaid (!!!!), and they are expected to be in stores on April 29 and online on May 6 (and will cost $26.50). More may be coming in the future. It appears that yet another pressing of Blink-182's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket will be available at Hot Topic. This pressing is red/green/yellow splatter and will be limited to 2000 and should be popping up sometime next week online for purchase.
