Adele's album 25 has now crossed the 4 million mark of pure album sales. There are still four days left in sales tracking this week. She could be on track to reach another million in sales during the album's second week.
Eric Wilson on 11/30/15 - 07:32 PM
The first week numbers are in, and Adele's 25 has set a new record, at 3.38 million copies in its first week in the U.S. Congratulations to her!

Billboard reached out to various members of N*Sync to get their thoughts on Adele's accomplishment today, and Joey Fatone responded.
"Records are always meant to be broken, but with technology and current music business model, I thought this one would be tough to beat," Fatone tells Billboard. "In all honesty, Adele is the truth -- kinda excited a rare talent like hers is in the same breath as our group. I'm a huge fan....I even bought the damn album."
Eric Wilson on 11/24/15 - 03:51 PM
Nielsen Music confirms (via Billboard) that Adele has broken N*Sync's first week sales record in the U.S., selling at least 2.433 million copies in a little over three days.
Eric Wilson on 11/24/15 - 09:51 AM
I've run out of superlatives to describe Adele's sales numbers for 25, so let's just let them speak for themselves: she's sold 2.3 million copies in three days, putting her very close to beating N*Sync's first week record of 2.4 million in less than half the time; those numbers include 900,000 copies sold on iTunes on the first day alone, and she's projected to finish the week somewhere around 2.9 million. She also might bow out her second week with yet another million sold, becoming the first artist to ever do more than a million in two separate weeks. There really is no precedent for these kinds of sales.

Hits Daily Double is reporting that Justin Bieber's new album Purpose will track at 504,281 units sold. One Direction's new album Made In The A.M. tracked at second with 414,778 sold.

Justin Bieber's new album Purpose, is tracking to move 475,000-500,000 units, while One Direction's new album Made In The A.M., should move around 450,000-475,000 units.

HypeBot has a good rundown on the current state of the music industry. Vinyl continues to do really well.
If you add in the new ways of looking at albums in the digital domain (track equivalent albums = 10 and stream equivalent albums = 1500), total album sales are actually up 14% over last year at this time.

The weekly UK album charts are going to finally start using streaming data.
Industry sources, however, told the Guardian that there is a sense of anxiety within the UK record industry that it should not follow the US model, which is believed to be flawed. The fear is that replicating the US model could mean one massive single has the potential to skew the chart performance of the parent album, driving it up the charts even if the rest of the album is clogged with tumbleweed.

According to Billboard, Beck's Morning Phase was the lowest-selling LP of this year's album of the year nominees and the lowest-selling album to win AOTY since 2008.
For comparison, six out of the last 10 LPs to win album of the year have sold more than a million copies before nabbing the honor. And all but three have moved more than half a million copies before winning album of the year (Arcade Fire's The Suburbs was also shy of that milestone).

Hey, did you know barely anyone is buying albums? Well, the record industry hit a new low last week. Billboard is reporting that for the first time since album sales were counted, they've dropped below 4 million.
This week's 3.97-million album sales tally is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It's also the first time weekly sales have fallen below four million in that time span.

In its debut week, Lazaretto sold over 40,000 copies making it the highest first-week vinyl sales since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991.

Glenn Peoples, writing for Billboard:
People are still buying albums -- millions of them each week -- but new releases are accounting for a smaller percentage of those sales. Looking at the last five years of album sales, current release sales have fallen 38.1% while catalog sales have dropped 22.4%, according to Billboard analysis of Nielsen SoundScan. This disparity in rates of decline has meant catalog sales account for a greater share of total sales than five years ago.

Right after the boom that Record Store Day provided the vinyl industry, The Tennessean reports that Nashville-based United Records, currently the country's largest vinyl pressing plant, will expand its operations to the tune of adding 16 new presses (they currently have 30) in a brand-new warehouse. The expansion will run the plant $5.5 million.
The expansion plans come amid growing demand from vinyl enthusiasts. "Our belief is that it's being driven by the rise in digital," said Jay Millar, United Record's director of marketing. "People who want something tangible and the best sound quality and experience are going to vinyl as opposed to CDs." Millar said the 30 presses at the...

Beyoncé's new self-titled record sold more than 430k in its first day of release and is projected to sell more than 600k (all digital, of course) and debut at #1 on the Billboard. Remember that the record was released this past Friday, so that's 600k+ in four day span. Apparently the CD version of All Time Low's Don't Panic: It's Longer Now are limited to "only" 15,000 units. It may seem like a lot, but consider the fact that this band has multiple top-10 debuts in the sales charts. They've sold well over 1 million albums and 4 million singles worldwide. Hit the replies to discuss if you think this a sign of a future marketing strategy. Will bigger labels start limiting CD quantities to raise the incentive to buy them? Is this the "vinylification" of the CD?
