Right after the boom that Record Store Day provided the vinyl industry, The Tennessean reports that Nashville-based United Records, currently the country's largest vinyl pressing plant, will expand its operations to the tune of adding 16 new presses (they currently have 30) in a brand-new warehouse. The expansion will run the plant $5.5 million.
The expansion plans come amid growing demand from vinyl enthusiasts. "Our belief is that it's being driven by the rise in digital," said Jay Millar, United Record's director of marketing. "People who want something tangible and the best sound quality and experience are going to vinyl as opposed to CDs." Millar said the 30 presses at the...

The numbers are in for Record Store Day:
Billboard reports that over 369,000 LPs were sold the week ending April 20, with Record Store Day on the 19th. That's a record high since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, topping last year's RSD-week sales of 244,000 and the previous record, a pre-Christmas 295,000 during a week in December 2013.

Ironically enough, the top-selling vinyl release of the week was Childish Gambino's "Because the Internet." Hopefully it came with a download code.

Per Billboard's data, it was also a great week for indie stores: mom-and-pop retailers moved 19.4 percent of physical albums sold during RSD week, another "likely" SoundScan-era record.

Well, if you're not busy discussing if Record Store Day has been ruined, there are some cool releases coming out. Plus, I say getting outside to visit your local record store with some friends is as good an excuse as any (vinyl and beer is the secret to long living). We've created this open thread to discuss all the releases for this year. We'll keep it open throughout the weekend to post about what you've found and picked up and/or share any other deals that show up. Check the first post for some thoughts from staff on what they're looking to grab this year.

The Quietus has a great piece up about the negative effects that the 2014 Record Store Day has been having on the industry it's designed to help. The essay is filled with comments and quotes from small labels about the effects RSD has had on their schedules, releases, and a number of other problems. Who's to blame? In the minds of some, it's the major labels elbowing their way onto the scene and saying "What can we shit into the form of a record and shove into the hands of the wanton masses?" If you're planning on hitting the shops this year, does this change any of your purchasing plans?

Happy holidays music enthusiasts, hoarders or the absolutely insane like myself who, as of 6 a.m. this morning, had been camping out in front of Waterloo Records in Austin. Today we're celebrating the fourth annual Record Store Day. Besides the monster of releases half of us won't be able to snag, could care less or will eventually find jacked up in price on eBay, we must reflect on the reason this whole thing matters: the support of our favorite artists and locally own retailers that actually carry what some of us are looking for. Even if you don't think the "exclusives" matter too much, I walked away with more used vinyl treasures last year than limited pressings. Blake put it best...
