Joe Escalante from The Vandals is campaigning to become a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. The Atlantic wrote a story about Escalante and the free-speech issue he is currently facing in his campaign.
From the Article After racking up 20 years as an attorney and some 480 hours as a volunteer temporary judge presiding over everything from unlawful detainer lawsuits to small-claims cases, Escalante this year decided to put his name on the ballot for an open judicial seat for the upcoming June 5 election. He even has a red-, white-, and blue-hued campaign poster designed by Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic HOPE image of President Barack Obama.

Variety has settled its lawsuit with The Vandals. The magazine sued the band for their 2004 parody version of the logo from Hollywood Potato Chip.
From The ArticleThis was the worst thing that's ever happened to me, and to the band, and the hardest thing I've ever done. However, as my wife says, the crash course in federal court litigation made me a better lawyer. Hopefully this will be a lesson to other media companies and law firms with respect to how they deal with First Amendment issues in the Internet Age.
