It looks like Jack Dorsey is going to be named the new CEO of Twitter. I think this is a good move, given the options. I sincerely hope Twitter becomes as important to others as it has become to me. I honestly can't think of a more used app on my phone than Tweetbot (which is telling how important the service is to me, and how badly the first party apps suck).
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who has been serving as interim CEO for the past three months, is expected be named the company’s new permanent CEO as early as tomorrow, although that timeframe may change, according to sources. Dorsey will apparently continue to run Square, the payments company he founded where he’s also CEO.

Another day, another band being accused of inappropriate things with fans. Neck Deep has responded to the accusations on Twitter saying they are aware they have been made and want to get to the bottom of it:
We are very aware of the accusations being made and we take them very seriously. Please give us a moment to get to the bottom of this.

Alex Babinski of PVRIS has posted a message apologizing for some old tweets fans found from the band over the past few days.
Four years ago I paraphrased a comedian's tasteless joke on Twitter. In no way does it reflect who I am as a person or how I view women. I regret posting such a thoughtless comment and sincerely apologize to anyone I've offended.

The New York Times is reporting that Dick Costolo will be stepping down as CEO of Twitter.
Dick Costolo, Twitter’s embattled chief executive, is stepping down, the company said Thursday. Jack Dorsey, the company’s co-founder and chairman, will serve as interim chief executive while the board searches for a permanent successor. The change is effective July 1. Twitter shares were up more than 7 percent in after-hours trading immediately after the news was announced.

Danny Samet, merch and/or tour manager for bands like Say Anything, Dustin Kensrue, and Minus the Bear, has started posting a sign up at all his merch displays that reads: "Music should be a safe community. No misogyny, no homophobia, no transphobia, no racism, no sexual abuse. One strike, you're out." In the grand scheme of things it may be small, but I think it's awesome and I hope this sort of thing catches on at more shows.

Twitter released their new app Periscope this week. It's an app that allows you to create livestreams from your phone and anyone can join in and watch. I could see this being a tool for bands to use to livestream from the studio, throwing makeshift AMAs, or playing random acoustic performances for fans. The app is now available in the app store. Casey Newton over at The Verge talks more about the app for those curious:
Periscope has been in development for more than a year, and the app arrives showing nice attention to detail. You sign in with Twitter, and the first thing you see is a list of streams that are currently live. Below it, you’ll see a list of recent streams. Not all can be...

Some of you reading may like the band Fire and Ice, and some of you may want to know that they recently posted a variety of homophobic tweets and basically said they don't care if anyone is offended. I asked the label why they'd keep a band like this on their roster and didn't hear back. I think everyone can make their own decisions about what music they listen to and what they can put up with from artists ... but for me, this is one of the lines that renders a band unlistenable in my book.

Following our release of the Most Anticipated Albums for 2015, Matty of The 1975 just posted this very simple and intriguing tweet. What could it mean? Just a reference to the band name origin and the backstory we all know by now? Or something more like a release date of a new album to coincide with this? Either way, it's a perfect day to get even more wrapped up in the anticipation for this year's releases.

Laura Schneider, writing for Hypebot, on how the new changes to Facebook and Twitter could make music videos a top priority again for bands.
As digital promotion continues to rise in popularity, so does the proverbial bar. These major tech companies are paying attention to the engagement being driven by quality video content - if you're arriving late to the party, now would be the time for you to do the same. Yesterday Facebook shared that "shorter, timely video content tends to do well in News Feed." That suggests that short videos (tour announcements, backstage and studio snippets, etc.) might drive engagement as much or more than music videos and long form content.

Billboard and Twitter have teamed up to present the "real-time charts" to track the most popular music being shared on the social network.
The first is Billboard Trending 140, which compares the frequency a song is shared over the past hour with the hourly average of shares in the last day. The second is Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists, which ranks songs from artists with less than 50,000 Twitter followers by the volume of shares in a 24-hour period. There will also be weekly summaries showing the most popular tracks on Twitter during that time span.

I was planning to write something about this entire "who was talking about emo/pop-punk/whatever" debate that sprung up online yesterday (and touched on it via Twitter this morning), but Ben Cosman at The Wire nails the entire point I wanted to make in one paragraph:
A pissing-contest over who's liked emo longer isn't going to do the genre any favors in popularity. But of course an argument about emo descends into "I was talking about this band way before you were". As Cohen and Hyden (and a slew of others on Twitter) pointed out to Heisel, those who've hung around with the genre should be pleased with the progress it has made recently, both in terms of credibility and quality, instead...

Deadmau5 seemed to take issue with Arcade Fire throwing a few jabs EDM's way the past few weeks. During their Coachella set, Win Butler shouted out "to all the bands playing instruments this weekend" -- and the replies via Twitter from Deadmau5 range from, "arcade fire needs to settle down. some dudes devote their lives to instruments, others to electronic composition by cpu, dafuqs yer problem?" to "inb4 some fucking hipster throws a hackeysack at me." This is way cooler than when I get called out by disgraced band members on my Facebook page.

Twitter and Billboard have created the "Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts." A constantly updating chart of music that’s being talked about and shared by Twitter users.
Billboard has always been the standard by which music popularity is measured, and Twitter and its millions of users worldwide have added an entirely new dimension and pace to the way the marketplace interacts with, and evaluates, music and music-makers," said Janice Min, Co-President/Chief Creative Officer of the Entertainment Group of Guggenheim Media. "The Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts, a natural extension for media brands so in sync in the music space, stands to once again dramatically shape the conversation...
