Peter Kafka, writing for Re/Code:
Okay: YouTube wants us to know that the video for “See You Again,” Wiz Khalifa’s Paul Walker tribute from the most recent “Fast and the Furious” movie has been seen a billion times. But what YouTube really wants us to know is that lots of music videos have generated a billion views recently. Up until a few years ago, no video had generated a billion views, but now it’s happening all the time.

Josh Constine writes on TechCrunch about YouTube's new "Music Insights" tool that lets musicians see where they're most popular and may help with planning tour routings.
Top Cities: Shows artists where to plan concerts. They might discover foreign countries where they have a surprisingly large following, or that they have more fans in a smaller city like Oakland than its bigger neighbor San Francisco. It could also help them to convince radio stations in those cities to play them.

Irving Azoff has asked YouTube to pull roughly 20,000 songs off their site ... according to Billboard, they have not complied. This may get messy.
YouTube may have made deals with record labels, but to publicly perform songs, the company also has to take care of songwriters, which Azoff says are "massively underpaid" when it comes to digital services. Many songwriters are handled by publishers working through performance rights organizations like ASCAP and BMI, but Azoff is spearheading a new venture, Global Music Rights (GMR), which has managed to sign up about 42 songwriters like Smokey Robinson and Chris Cornell, who collectively have published about 20,000 songs.

YouTube's subscription services will be called "YouTube Music Key." It will be ad-free, contain music and music videos, and be $7.99. The service will launch in invite-only beta next week.
The service, which launches next week in invite-only beta, is to be called YouTube Music Key. "Artists and fans have made YouTube the biggest music service in the world," says Christophe Muller, YouTube’s director of global music partnerships. "We want to continue to make YouTube the best place for artists and fans to connect."

The Financial Times is reporting YouTube has negotiated a deal with some indie labels for the launch of a music service.
People familiar with the matter said the deal was signed in recent days following months of acrimonious negotiations, in which YouTube threatened to take down music videos by artists such as Adele and the Arctic Monkeys if its demands were not met.

The Financial Times is reporting that YouTube is re-negotiating with indie labels after the backlash they received recently.
But the uproar that followed the revelations has prompted YouTube to make a last-minute U-turn. The world's largest video streaming company is allowing more time to negotiate a solution with labels, although it still intends to block them if they cannot reach agreement, according to people familiar with the matter.

Billboard has obtained "a typical contract" being offered by YouTube to indie label partners for its new subscription service.
Those company payment percentages are lower than the combined 70% in revenue (approximately) that the interactive, premium component of services like Spotify or Rdio pay to labels and publisher rights owners, according to label and digital service sources.

But, it turns out, indies’ unhappiness with YouTube has more to do with contract terms other than the rates they would be paying.

The main beef with YouTube is the company's take-it-or-leave-it approach, which they say includes an onerous and negative most-favored-nation clause. If any major label or...

"Gangnam Style" has now surpassed 2 billion views on YouTube -- that's equivalent to 140 million hours, or more than 16,000 years years of watching this video.
Had people not been watching PSY—the South Korean pop star who released the song in July 2012—they could have constructed three such ships. Alternatively they could have built more than four Great Pyramids of Giza, or another Wikipedia, or six Burj Khalifas in Dubai (the world’s tallest building). The song’s nearest rival is Justin Bieber’s “Baby”, at a paltry one billion views. The opportunity cost of watching PSY’s frivolity is huge, but humanity has at least been entertained.

YouTube is preparing to roll out an ad-free music service and the Financial Times is reporting it will block videos from indie artists that don't sign up for this new offering. The Financial Times is behind a pay-wall, but the The Verge has a good rundown:
The FT quotes Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s head of content and business operations, confirming that the service plans to block videos from any artists or labels who have not signed on to its new paid service, "to ensure that all content on the platform is governed by its new contractual terms."

The WorldWide Independent Network, an organization that represents independent record labels around the world, has released a statement in regard to negotiations with YouTube about their upcoming music streaming service. The most troubling is the threat of pulling their videos from YouTube if the terms are not agreed to.
At a time when independent music companies are increasing their global market share WIN has raised major concerns about YouTube’s recent policy of approaching independent labels directly with a template contract and an explicit threat that their content will be blocked on the platform if it is not signed.

According to WIN members, the contracts currently on offer to...

The planned YouTube music service is reportedly facing delays due to "design problems."
YouTube, which offers millions of tracks already on an ad-supported basis, is the No. 1 music streaming service in the world. The company is still working through which premium features would persuade its audience to pay a monthly fee, according to Billboard. Those curious what the finished product will look like will have to wait a while longer.

Billboard is reporting that YouTube is close to launching their very own music streaming service.
One big added feature could be the ability to stream full albums. Currently, not all songs in an album are available on YouTube because artists generally select one or two tracks from any single album to feature in a music video. A second potential premium feature would be offline cacheing of songs and videos so users can listen on their mobile devices even when they're not connected or when they're trying to save on bandwidth costs or battery consumption. Finally, the removal of ads would almost certainly be a feature in the premium offering, sources said.
