View Full Version : Don't Let The NHL Die
Here in Canada, there aren't really concerns that people will ever stop wanting to watch hockey and go to the games... but in places like Nashville, Columbus, or even Florida and other places like that. Anyone else think this lockout is going to mean the end of some of the teams that DON'T have super-solid fan bases? What teams do you think are in danger?

I say screw those teams, because they never had a solid fan base to begin with (unless their team miraculaously made the playoffs).
The league is way too watered down. Cutting off a few more sucky teams to make everything more competitive would be fine with me.

You know, personally, I don't think teams in Florida or California or Tennessee deserve hockey teams. When the hell does it ever snow in those places? I'm from Washington state and it snows all the time. Do we have a hockey team? No. That kind of bugs me.

You kinda have a point I guess. There are some teams that are totally stacked, but also, you're right in saying the league is watered down, there are sooo many players. It would probably be a good thing if some of the expansionISH teams left the league, and only the best players stayed around. But I'm not sure that the League would be able to survive losing teams and losing fans after this year of no hockey. In the States, the tv ratings are already so pitiful, we're about as popular as table-tennis. The future just doesn't look promising.

Amen. You will never understand how pissed I was that Tampa Bay won the Cup last year. Their fans know nothing about hockey. They just jumped on the bandwagon of a winning team. For crying out loud, during the playoffs last year, one Tampa Bay newspaper needed to explain the anatomy of a puck in order to help fans understand. If I could destroy one place on this earth, I would wipe Tampa Bay off the map.
And yes ... I am a Flyers fan.

hey, i grew up in san jose, california. you could walk to downtown from my house. what im getting at is that going to the sharks games as a kid and even now if im home are probably the most fun ive had at a sporting event. who cares where the team is located as long as they have a fan base? would it make sense for washington to have a hockey team? yes. do they have one? no. but i dont think thats a fair reason to bag on other teams just because you dont have one. i know it never snows in san jose, but theres ALOT of die-hard sharks fans there and i really dont know what would happen if they ever left.
''A guy who doesn't do his job shouldn't be there ... He put hockey where it shouldn't belong. You get rid of six or seven teams that don't belong where they are ... Some states just aren't marketable, some cities. Hockey's not a national sport in the U.S., and Gary Bettman doesn't have a feel for that. That's my opinion.'' _Chris Chelios

dude forget getting rid of those teams...move some of them...why does florida have two teams...keep TB (for obvious reasons) and move a team back to winnipeg...take the kings or the sharks or ducks and move em to hartford, Maine (great college hockey yet no NHL team) or freaking Sasketchewan. Why is there a hockey team in PHOENIX ARIZONA?!?! it just doesn't make sense. get rid of some excess teams...re-establish age old rivalries...get rid of bettman...
just bring back hockey...it's all I want.

Yeah there are too many teams like most of the sports but I still love my yotes!
Their new arena (two miles from my old house) has made real estate boom in my area and therefore is helping to pay for my college (we sold our house and I got a lot of the money).

At this point I think it's better if we just wait it out and the owners contract the league/use replacement players.. whatever it takes. The players have gotten too greedy, small-market teams can't compete (and yes I know how well small-market teams have done in the last few years. But it's just going to get to the point where they can't afford ANYONE even the mediocre players they are getting to take them through the playoffs).
The players won't hold out forever if replacement players are brought over. The NHL will slowly go back to normal. Any solution reached right now will be a week one, and another lockout/strike will occur when this CBA expires.

You would want replacement players?

Yes... it wouldn't last as replacment players. Slowly players would start filtering back in, you know NHL players can't live without their money. It happened with Baseball, it can happen with Hockey (not that it solved anything with baseball).

Yea, hockey can't die... things have gotten so bad. Scott Gomez, Rookie of the year 98-99, helped the Devils win the 00-01 Stanley, and has scored almost 400 goals in the past 4-5 years. And now, due to the lockout, he's come BACK to Alaska to play for the Alaska Aces, and ECHL (minor pro) team for $500 a week. He was a star in the NHL and now he's gone from a six figure salary, to $500 a week....
I hate the Devils, but I respect Gomez for that. It's all about the love of the game, baby. Bring in replacement players ... screw sports politics and let's watch kids play who actually care more about the game than making six-digit figures.

I miss hockey so much now that I'm in college. I played in high school but decided to stop playing after that. The NHL can't go away, I need some sort of hockey to watch.
