Agreed. Just off the top of my head, Bill Irwin, Ralph Fiennes (In Bruges), Aaron Eckhart, David Harbour and Michael Shannon all deserved a nomination more, and i'm sure I could find more with research.
That being said, I will absolutely be watching. Love award season so much.

I feel like there is no way in hell they won't give Supporting Actor to Ledger.
And it's well-deserved too.
None of those other performances by supporting actors comes close to Ledger as the Joker.
He pretty much made The Dark Knight.
Then again, Philip Seymour Hoffman seems to win a lot of awards, so he may get the nod. As good as Tropic Thunder was, I don't think that either performance should win. I might be one of the only people that thought that Robert Downey Jr. wasn't anything special in Tropic Thunder.

Still haven't seen a lot of these movies, so some of these are just shots in the dark. I plan on seeing just about everything before the Oscars so I can put a little more of my person preference into the predictions.
Best Motion Picture - Drama
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Revolutionary Road
Slumdog Millionaire
Hard choice on best picture. I think it'll probably be Slumdog Millionaire, even though I slightly preferred Benjamin Button (only because of the performances). I don't know much about The Reader, but I think I would be safe in ruling that and Revolutionary Road out. If it's neither of the two I've seen, I would be willing to bet that Frost/Nixon would be the spoiler.
Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Burn After Reading
Happy-Go-Lucky
In Bruges
Mamma Mia!
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Since I've only seen one of these films and I haven't read much about the others, I'll just go on the fact that I absolutely loved Burn After Reading.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Brad Pitt
Frost/Nixon - Frank Langella
Milk - Sean Penn
Revolutionary Road - Leonardo DiCaprio
The Wrestler - Mickey Rourke
I thought Brad Pitt turned in one of the best and most moving performances of the year in Benjamin Button, but as much as I would like to see him win, I just don't see it happening. From what I've heard, Mickey Rourke's turn in The Wrestler is not only the performance of his career, but the performance of the year. With all the talk he is getting, I can't honestly see any of the others taking it from him.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
In Bruges - Colin Farrell
In Bruges - Brendan Gleeson
Last Chance Harvey - Dustin Hoffman
Pineapple Express - James Franco
Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Javier Bardem

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger
Doubt - Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Duchess - Ralph Fiennes
Tropic Thunder - Tom Cruise
Tropic Thunder - Robert Downey Jr.
Without Ledger and his unfortunate and heartbreaking death, The Dark Knight would have received nowhere near the attention it did. Ledger's Joker is easily the most talked about performance of the year, and for good reason. He makes the film. He's completely unrecognizable and different from anything he ever did (although so is Downey), but he is also legitimately horrifying as a character, one of those performances where you're always forgetting who is is underneath the character. He's still not as good as Javier Bardem was in a similar role last year, but he'll win no matter what. Two years in a row for the crazy serial killer in this category.

I agree it's deserved and I agree that he made The Dark Knight. I don't think Hoffman will beat him. He's had his Golden Globe and Oscar gold, and as The Dark Knight is Ledger's greatest and final role, I think voters will honor him at last.
Downey was great in Tropic Thunder and even better in Iron Man, probably the best performance as the superhero in a superhero movie that I've ever seen. Too bad they'll never give him a nod for that.

fair enough, i still think he's great and nearly every comedian or "funny" guy tonight has bombed. That's because they don't know their audience. Ricky Gervais played it perfectly however.
Hahahaha, I love you Tina

yes, but who ARE they?
It"s made up of 82 foreign "journalists" who have their credibility challenged every year. Most of them aren't even full time journalists. Pretty much, this is just the biggest party of the year for the stars.

Tracy Morgan
Ricky Gervais

Its no coincidence that foreign films often win best picture from the hFpa. By foreign I mean Atonement, Babel, etc.

Which explains the lack of Best Pic noms for Milk, The Dark Knight, The Wrestler. In their place, The Reader.

so basically if stars need a push they can lobby these "journalists" for a nomination? (ie tom cruise)

Yeah, they don't even really have to lobby. The HFPA know that if they nominate big stars, they'll show up.

I always find it funny that in clip shows for Speilberg, they conveniently leave out Hook and Always.

Kind of disappointed he's not directing Trial of the Chicago 7. Speilberg directing a Sorkin script is like a dream come true.

Yeah. They (Speilberg and Sorkin) seem pretty excited about it, and after the success of Tropic Thunder I have faith he can do a fine job on a dramatic film. And really, when Sorkin writes the script it's really hard to fuck that up.

Yeah that's what makes it so hard. And I know Fincher spent like 4 years getting Button made so I kinda feel bad for him, but what Boyle did with India and everything was just incredible.
Revolutionary Road was dissapointing. It doesn't give explanation as to how they become so miserable. Its just a movie about miserable people being miserable and yes, it makes you feel miserable.
