I think I'd probably rate it as being on par with Sunshine although, personally, I think I felt Moon was more cohesive because I didn't really enjoy the second half of that movie (the semi-slasher flick part) as much as the first. That's just personal opinion though.

I liked Moon better than Sunshine because I wasn't too fond of the second half of the movie. I am requesting it from netflix to rewatch though because I'm in a sci fi mood lately and like to compare to the stuff I've been seeing lately.

I had two problems with the film. One, If I was alone for 3 years and began to hallucinate I think I would be a little more freaked out seeing a live version of myself. Same goes for the second clone. They covered it definitely, but I thought something like that deserved a little more. Two, it would have been cool is gerty worked against them kind of like 2001. While he was there to help you would think Lunar would make his ultimate goal to accomplish the mission.
Other than that I really enjoyed it and will probably see it again. Rockwell did a fine job.

I really liked the fact that Gerty was sympathetic towards Sam. If it acted like Hal then there would be too many people accusing it as being a ripoff.

I agree with this. I was actually happy that Gerty wasn't evil because I felt like it was a nice change of pace not to have the villain be another evil robot for once. 2001 is certainly a classic, but I just liked the change of pace in Moon.

Again, the richest energy company on Earth doesn't put in failsafes for this scenario? That just seems silly to me. Gerty, just like HAL, wouldn't have been "evil." The computer was just doing what it was programmed to do. Gerty seemed to offer far too much help to the clones. Is anyone suggesting that Gerty has somehow developed sympathy because he views the clones as he does himself? If so, again how does a company with that much power not keep closer tabs on it's only employee?

at first I was confused at the end when the people were talking, I thought he was just picking up on radio signals from Earth. Then I looked at the Wikipedia page and it said that it was people being outraged by the humanitarian violations by the company.
Another thing, the ship that he put himself in is always autopiloted, to Earth, to the companies plants, or so I assume. So how could he have escaped if he was sent directly to the company itself? And even if figured out how to steer the thing, wouldn't the company be able to realize that one of the ships is flying off course, and then retrieve it?
overall a really good film I thought.

the only employee on the moon. also, Gerty is supposed to do anything to help Sam right? So I just think that he was doing his job by entering the password. Some of it shouldn't have happened though, like letting him go outside. He obviously had direct orders not to let him do it, and I think that a direct order from Earth would be able to override any of his previous commands.
Sunshine was incredible which makes me think I'd love this. Too bad my fucking torrent stalled.
Sunshine WAS awesome. Cillian Murphy is one of my favorite actors.
So I guess this isn't out in a lot of places? I saw it at AMC 30 in Barrington outside of Chicago, so I guess that qualifies as a select theater.

Haha, I actually agree with what you're saying. Logically, no, it doesn't make much sense in certain scenes. If a computer runs the risk of becoming self aware or extending sympathy towards the clones, you're right, a company like that would probably want to keep closer tabs on it. That being said, on the most basic, surface level, I just liked that the computer wasn't behind it. That's all.

This moving was haunting and fantastic, but I have to admit, there was a 20 minute section where I got a pinch sleepy. It was definitely...deliberately paced. A lot of the movie was completely fantastic, but shortly after the "first" clone was awakened, I really kind of got dragged down a bit There is a pretty decent chance I was just tired though.
Rockwell was so fantastic I could hardly handle it. What a tour de force. Really made me hate Lunar Corp. though. Eff that fictional mega-conglomerate!
oh man, i gotta see this this weekend
Excellent all around. As others have said, Rockwell put on a great performance; you had to feel for the guy.
The pure look of the film was haunting and beautiful. And they did it all for like 7 mil, right?
Plot went in a way I didn't expect based on the trailer, but I think the real plot was better than my supposed plot, so no complaints.

I would definitely say it's one of the best pictures of the year, even though that's not saying much, but I'm sure it will be in my top five by the end of the year. I'm just saying, even with the expanded ten nominees, it will most likely not be nominated. I really hope the Academy recognizes Sam Rockwell. He deserves a nomination for this.

Just saw it earlier today...not as scary as I thought it was going to be.
I have a question I'm confused about...
when they woke up Sam (the first one we see to be in the infirmary) the robot told him that there was an accident and he needed to go through some tests. Is this what they use to wake up all the clones? So the Sam thinks he just got there and there was some accident? If that Sam was new and had only been there about a week, why was he so inclined to "get back to work" and get off the ship?

Yea, they told all the clones that there was an accident. It was a coincidence that there actually was an accident later on for Sam 1. I think they were sort of "programmed" to "get back to work" or whatever, I dont know. Sam 2 only got off the ship because Sam 1 didnt want to leave cause he knew he was going to die. Sam 2 wanted Sam 1 to leave and when he declined he took his place. At the end of the movie you can hear tv chatter that sounds like congressional hearing or something and I think we are supposed to assume that Sam 2 made it home and it pressing charges against Lunar Industries or whatever.

I saw this movie tonight and I really enjoyed it. I think Sam Rockwell's acting was fantastic but the movie itself doesn't deserve any Oscar nods IMO. It was a good movie none the less.
One thing I'm confused on: How the hell did Sam 2 know he was a clone? I mean sure, seeing an exact replica of yourself is a good indication but the dude knew the entire time and didn't want anything to do with Sam 1 at the beginning. If he knew he was a clone then why didn't Sam 1 know he was a clone too? Or any of the Sam's from missions before Sam 1?

I got the feeling that Sam 2 was "special." He was obviously the first clone to fake an incident with GERTY to get outside of the base before the rescue team got there. He was much more stand offish than Sam 1, though obviously this is due to his 3 years less of experience and the taped transmissions that supposedly made him a more mellow and contemplative person. I'd say this is where the scifi theme really kicked in, as you see it all the time, the unique evolved Clone/Robot/Drone: Deckard, Murdoch, Wall*E, ad nauseum.

I'd say this is where the scifi theme really kicked in, as you see it all the time, the unique evolved Clone/Robot/Drone: Deckard, Murdoch, Wall*E, ad nauseum. still doesn't explain how he knew he was a clone. Or at least why sam 1 didn't know.

Sure it does. Give one other rational explanation. Sam 1 had seen something, before the accident (the woman in the chair), that wasn't there. He thought he was going crazy. Sam 2 had a good idea that he was not going crazy. So, again give an alternative rational conclusion Sam 2 could've come upon.

I think Sam 2 was skeptical because he heard gerty talking with the company with a live feed. So because Sam 2 'wanted to get back to work,' and one of the machines was offline, it gave him a good excuse to go explore this 'accident.' I don't think he necessarily knew he was a clone (until he found Sam 1 of course), but knew that something fishy was going on because of the gerty/company conversation.
In regards to Sam 1 not knowing he was a clone, he had spend '3 years' on the moon, getting tapes from his wife, etc etc. He didn't lose any memories when he got in the accident, so he knew that this Sam 2 was not the original. He obviously wouldn't think he was a clone too to begin with, but later it shows his skepticism when he goes and looks for the logs of previous crew. I don't know if that clears any of your questions up. I'm not really sure I know exactly what you find confusing so if this doesn't help maybe clarify a little for me?
Also at the end, I think it was just a compilation of different news outlets because I also remember hearing some dude say that this dude was 'some kind of nutjob' along with other things, mixed in with static, so it seems like there were different clips of audio from different sources.

Yeah, I found the striking difference between Sam 1 and Sam 2 to be quite amazing. It was one of my favorite aspects of the movie. I really felt so much compassion for Sam 1, poor guy. He went through so much and died with no hope for himself.

Yeah, It really makes you think with all the previous Sam's, if each one had their own sort of personality transcendence. Like Sam 1 talking about how Sam 2 had to work on his temper and etc. Its interesting how each one would have had to start out at this point where they each had to work on themselves. Makes you wonder why Lunar would create such a human clone, with these memories/problems, to work on the moon.

The only thing that disappointed me about this movie was the ending, you care for both Sams for so long and you can't tell what happened to him at the end. Was he locked up cause he was a nut job? Did he make it home to his daughter?
Also, for the reasons Sam 2 knew he was a clone, he said in the movie Gerty told him that he was a clone.

Yeah, but he had suspicions about that beforehand and asked Gerty that, which Gerty agreed to.

As stated earlier, there's a news clip being played in the background on his way back to earth where they are saying he's talking about hundreds of others, and they say "he's an immigrant, he should be locked up with no rights" or something to that nature. Doesn't sound like him and Eve have some sort of reunion. Plus, Eve called her dad on the live feed right before Sam 1 put it down, which would mean that the original Sam is probably back with her. I don't think Eve would respond to well to a second daddy.

Right, I understood what you meant. Never mind me.
I don't really have anything else to retort with.. if the movie's been released anywhere then I don't know why anyone would think it's a good idea to click a thread about it if they wanted to remain spoiler free. That seems like common sense to me. Sure, spoiler tags are courteous and everything, but it's hardly reasonable to gripe at colorlesscliche for not using them in what was a pretty mild sentence as far as spoilers go.
i'm just saying, the thread has been full of reviews/comparisons/overall thoughts on the movie, but any "spoilers", whether they're big or small, have been hidden in the spoiler tag. it's just lazy/inconsiderate posting.

Because its a lot better hearing reviews from your peers than critics? I don't trust Rotten Tomatoes, nor half of their critics on there. I, personally, click these threads to see if movies are getting a good review from people that I consider to be more in tune with what I enjoy in movies. I mean, its just common courtesy to put spoilers for the first couple weeks or months that a movie is out, and considering this is still in limited release, it should give people more of a reason to put spoilers on for people that haven't had the chance to see it yet.

Saw this last night, thought it was genius. Reminded me of a mix between 2001 and blade runner. The atmosphere was totally flawless. The classical music mixed with luner movement was very much like 2001 and for 7 mill a great job was done on the use of special effects and settings, but they probably saved a lot becasue of the lack of a supporting cast. Probably one of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen, because it was not to much and was not to little and hit all the right points about the numerous topics it touch on. The fact that Lunar bases the moon like the '60's based the middle east as a ever lasting resource was very interesting with the shots showing the vast areas of the moon that had already been harvested in the short (I think) 15 years they have been harvesting Helium 3 and how much has already been harvested was a great story element. There is a lot more to this movie then what is seen on the surface. Sorry for any spoilers i tried to cover them up

But this is a great, simple, cerebral sci-fi film. Underneath all the big sci-fi blockbusters this year it's good to see that a good story will trump multi-million dollar special effects budgets every time.

wow, I just read a few descriptions of Mute and it sounds amazing.

Link ? Really, all I know about is it is that it's basically Duncan Jones' version of Blade Hunter. I've only heard tiny bits of the story.

that's all that I have read, too. I hadn't read anything about it until you mentioned it and it sounds like it has enormous potential.

One thing I also heard about the movie is that it'll possibly give glimpses to what happened to Sam after he got to Earth as well as a possible Sam Rockwell cameo.

Mute and Source Code both sound awesome. Jones and Bomkamp will seriously save sci-fi

Friend recommended this to me a couple days ago so I picked it up and watched it last night. What a great movie, and the haunting theme music that plays throughout the film is fantastic as well.

Calling it a sequel was a bad move on my part, because it isn't. I remember reading somewhere that it's set in the same universe and Sam Bell will make an appearance though.

How Sam Rockwell was passed up for a Best Actor nod this year is beyond me.
Got the blu ray a few days ago, just waiting to sit back, chuck it in the ps3, and enter another dimension...

This. Not even a mention of him anywhere.
A fantastic piece of science fiction.
Best movie I've seen all year (I think, for now). And believe me, I've seen very great things this year.
I still can't believe how spectacular this film is. I watched The Man from Earth around a month ago as well, and I'm still not sure which I like better. But both films are insanely awesome.
