The Billboard
Terrain started out as a pipe dream between two cynical teenagers, William Doyle and Randall Ryan Mentzos, who hated where they lived and used music as an escape from that cynicism. Seems typical enough for a band that would host a profile on absolutepunk, right? Oh wait, that's right, they lived in different countries. They wrote songs over an online telephone program called Skype, recorded their respective parts at home, and they would be subsequently mixed by one of the members. The internet is a beautiful thing. They were originally called Sorry About Tomorrow, which fit the whiny, depressing music they wrote at this age of angst.

But while that makes for a great story, unfortunately at the ages of 16 neither could round up the proper equipment to record past an acoustic setting. Having greater ambitions and beginning to develop creative differences, the two split off into their own respective projects. Randall elected to resume the band from where it left off, under the new name Northbrook in an effort to complete a full-length album whether it was with or without his songwriting partner. Northbrook recorded an album entitled Maybe... with the intent of emulating the early 00s pop-punk sound that inspired the band's formation originally.

During four years of general inactivity due to college enrollment, bassist Ian Weager was added to the band and together Ian and Randall opted to take the music in a new direction. The band has recently changed it's name again to Terrain, with the intent to release a new album entitled Chimney Ash sometime in early 2013. The album has been steadily in the making for the past two years, and is a departure of sorts from the previously pop-punk influenced sound, with a focus on more complex, layered instrumentation and lyrics that more often use imagery to get a meaning across.
