Album ReviewIn This Moment - The Dream

The Billboard
One always hears the same old adage growing up that you should “believe in your dreams, because dreams really do come true.” Well, this statement perfectly defines the life of IN THIS MOMENT’s frontwoman, Maria Brink, who always believed that she would become a rock star, and overcome all of the obstacles that stood in her way while having to escape an overall non-positive environment.

Brink, an Albany, NY native, refused to let any of this deter her from achieving her lifelong goal and soon embarked for Los Angeles to begin her musical career. After a number of odd jobs and failed creative partnerships her life soon took a sudden turn upon meeting guitarist Chris Howorth in 2005, as the two immediately realized that they had something special together. This union would soon be rounded out by Jeff Fabb (drums), Blake Bunzel (guitars) and Jesse Landry (bass) to form IN THIS MOMENT, who just three years later performed to a sold-out crowd at the renowned Madison Square Garden opening for Ozzy Osbourne, ultimately proving dreams do come true.

Now the group are poised to take their already stellar career to soaring new heights with their aptly titled sophomore release, The Dream, which is a dynamic, hard rock opus that proves the band has matured well beyond their years. The much anticipated offering was produced by the acclaimed Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne) and showcases the band’s songwriting prowess and Brink’s beautiful, angelic voice that is simply captivating.

Howorth further describes the concept behind the album: “The basic idea behind calling our new album The Dream is that inside dreams anything can happen, all the things that seem impossible or unreachable in the ‘real world’ become a reality in your dreams. We've always been a band that believes in the power of dreams and that believing is creating. We wanted to make a record that you can lay down with, shut off the lights and have a total outerbody experience. We also wanted the record to be like a rollercoaster ride with explosive highs, beautiful lows and everything in between. Maria took her vocals to the next level and explored all the possibilities. Everyone will be surprised by all the melody, passion and strength she brings to the record. The band pulled from within to create a powerful unique sound that no one will expect.”

IN THIS MOMENT spent the majority of 2007 touring relentlessly across the U.S. alongside Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Kittie and Walls of Jericho in support of their debut offering Beautiful Tragedy, which was quickly embraced by media worldwide. This buzz soon led them into a massive European tour with Devildriver to kick off the summer. This overseas run also afforded them the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of new people at some of Europe’s biggest festivals (Download, Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park) alongside some of the genre’s most renowned acts such as Iron Maiden and Korn, among countless others. IN THIS MOMENT capped off the summer of 2007 on Ozzfest and ultimately emerged as the fest’s most talked about artist.

However, it was in the fall of 2007 where the band proved that they could withstand any obstacle in their path as they embarked on a North American tour as direct support to Megadeth, ultimately garnering a new legion of fans across the country. Their undeniable buzz soon caught the attention of the Osbourne camp who offered the band a much-coveted opening slot on the massive Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie, three-month North American arena trek. The group quickly proved they could handle their own on the main stage alongside the titans of hard rock. They also created a solid buzz at commercial radio with their single for the track, “Beautiful Tragedy,” which broke into the Top 40 on the Active Rock charts with big support coming from outlets like Sirius Satellite Radio's "Octane," Seattle's KFNK and Madison's WJJO. The single has gathered over 6,000 commercially monitored spins and over twenty million in monitored audience.

Their invigorating mixture of metal and hard rock quickly caught the attention of fans of acts ranging from AFI and Avenged Sevenfold to Bleeding Through and Atreyu. The diversity and depth was refreshing and simply undeniable. In 2008, they continue to carve out their own unique and exhilarating chapter in the hard rock genre, laying the foundation for an extremely bright future. This group is collectively defined by their undying belief in themselves and this confidence and strength is conveyed perfectly through their new material.

For IN THIS MOMENT, the dream was always to become a worldwide phenomenon and that is something that will never fade, especially with this new effort. If you haven’t heard of IN THIS MOMENT, it won’t be long until you do because this band is at the brink of greatness.
