The Billboard A movement, a lifestyle, a society, a global underground force, a gang, an army, a collective, depression, sex, prestige - out of Chicago's underground rose Kill Hannah, immortalized by the object of singer Mat Devine's first heartbreak, and defined by romance and ferocity.
Over the last 10 years, Kill Hannah has been the rallying soundtrack for thousands of like-minded nu romantics who wear their hearts on their skin - as scores of fans can attest to with their sniper heart tattoos. They've inspired Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) to call Kill Hannah "the future of Chicago rock" and Mikey Way (My Chemical Romance) to implore listeners to "love them as much as we do"
After starting in Devine's art school dorm room, now five records deep, a Kerrang Award nomination, and thousands of devotees who don war paint in solidarity with Mat, Kill Hannah give us their latest creation, Wake Up The Sleepers. Both self-produced and deeply personal, Mat calls Wake Up The Sleepers the record we "always intended to make...us being us, the way it was in the beginning," adding that this is the "most real I've ever been."
The most important Kill Hannah album to date, Wake Up The Sleepers features friends new and old, lending their voices to the tracks, including Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls), Benji Madden (Good Charlotte), and Chibi (The Birthday Massacre), as well as a killer guitar solo by Tom Schleiter (Powerspace), who has also toured live with the band. Keeping true to their Chicago roots, the Chicago Children's Choir also appear on a few occasions, adding a dynamic and intimacy that is as haunting as it is innocent. From the driving pulse of "New York City Speed" to the euphoric rise of "Strobe Lights" Kill Hannah have created a singular and unique sound that embodies the collective consciousness of their brazen community.
Since 1997, the band has played sold out gigs at Chicago's world-famous Metro Club, had a TOP 40 hit on Modern Rock radio with "Lips Like Morphine" and toured around the world as headliners and with HIM, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Sounds, Lost Prophets, IMA Robot, MSI, Shiny Toy Guns and even Scott Weiland with Velvet Revolver. Along the way they've amassed an army of co-conspirators in their cause. The Kill Hannah Kollective (KHK), a worldwide community of fans, has been the lifeblood of their career and the band return the favor by immersing themselves in the culture that has taken root around them, from the wildly popular Fuse blog The Raccoon Society, to the DJ outfit Dark Wave Disco, the fashion line/online community Chicago Suicide Club, and a yearly Chicago "New Heart For Xmas" show, now an annual weekend of events that draws fans from around the globe.
Kill Hannah introduces Wake Up the Sleepers, the band's proudest accomplishment, to their stalwart fans with a determined eye focused on new converts. They will head out on tour with She Wants Revenge, followed by a slew of headlining dates. In keeping with their relentless DIY attitude the band have partnered with independent label Original Signal, which fosters true partnerships with each artist on their roster, and embraces a progressive, long-term outlook. The current lineup features Dan Wiese on guitar and background vocals, bassist Greg Corner, drummer Elias Mallin, and vocalist/guitarist Mat Devine.
