The Billboard It's been a long journey the past two years for Richmond, Virginia's Safety Word Orange. After forming the band in late 2007 and recording their debut Self-Titled EP in Los Angeles, California, Safety Word Orange moved back to their hometown of Richmond, Virginia to continue the movement they started out west.
Safety Word Orange was formed when lead singer James Mason met guitarist Robbie Rusbuldt in Los Angeles in late 2007. Upon returning to Virginia they began searching for a more permanent line-up. The first addition was guitarist Jackson Wise, followed by Reid Taylor on the bass and Travis King on drums.
In 2008 SWO was named "Indie Artist of the Year" by Music Emissions who said, " Safety Word Orange has a great start here; they have the ability to write power-pop songs that have a feel good vibe." Their pop-rock instrumentals are the foundation behind lead singer James Mason's Third Eye Blind-esque vocals, backed by the clear tones of both Wise and Rusbuldt. "With as much musicianship as you can handle, Safety Word Orange is one of the best bands you've never heard." says Starpulse.com.
In January 2010, Safety Word Orange finished recording their second record, "On Your Mark, Get Set..." at Red Wire Audio with acclaimed producer Bryan Russell (Straylight Run, Envy On the Coast) The record is set for release on May 18, 2010.

+ SWO aren't the Beatles and it's not controversial to put a swear word in a sad song, i for one think it makes the message stronger. |

LOL, can you imagine if the Beatles had sung, "Hey Jude, don't give a f---, take a sad song and make it better." ???!!!!
That would be ridiculous. Same thing here. Don't pollute a good thing.

01:12 AM on 10/22/10 | I listen to plenty of music with horrible language in it-- perhaps too much.
But here is an interesting track by Safety Word Orange. It is a calmer, more collected moment for them. But then, quite abruptly, the f-word makes its distasteful appearance and sends that moment crashing to the ground.
With a single word, they manage to reduce their level of sophistication from that of a young man to that of a brash, angsty teenager. And the band's choice to include this IN THE CHORUS no less, shoots their credibility through and through with gaping holes. Shaming.

07:48 AM on 10/21/10 | In contrast to the use below who can't handle a swear word... I love 'Halloween' just as much as I love On Your Mark. Get Set. Keep up the great work guys :D

11:26 PM on 10/19/10 | I was really into it for a while. Jackson's definitely got that natural, high, and clear tenor range, and it's put on display for this track. His voice has an undeniable tone that many singers wish they could pull off themselves. His voice, and ultimately, his presence in the band is worth its weight and gold. The other singer (namely the LEAD singer) is.. good. His voice is affable here at least. Nice work there.
But uh... "All the times I called you up...you never really gave a f-"..? Seriously? You had a nice, soothing, acoustic groove going here..and then decided to take a piss on it. Leave the nastiness out of this song. You had a graciously mellow tone for the first minute or so, but then you suck all the credibility of it out with a single, nasty word. And it's part of the chorus too! Good grief.
Wonderful performance though, nice harmonies here, there, and throughout.
Don't over-obsess with this "On Your Mark, Get Set.." image though. Completely turn yourselves upside down with the new record. Bust out some sexy, fatback chords... and some jazzier chords all around. You guys could easily take this "power pop emo" band and turn it into a more unclassifiable ensemble, earning you guys some substantial musical merit. What an evolution that would be!
I mean, c'mon! Would it kill you to leave room for a nice, somewhat bountiful guitar solo every now and then? For example, on your new record... think about the idea of having GUEST MUSICIANS on some of your "B-side" tracks. 'Solo by:_____'..blah, blah blah. You guys are based in RICHMOND, VA!! The streets are just CRAWLING with great players!! You guys could do some serious work in River City, but you'll have to stretch out into unchartered waters a bit. You guys are good, but MAN! I love it when bands such as these dare to be amazing.
