Thoughts on The Dangerous Summer
Thoughts on The Dangerous Summer

Honestly, I really wish I didn't read the review for Reach for the Sun. It's having a Lydia effect on me.

What I mean is when Lydia's Illuminate came out to much acclaim on this site last year, I was excited. The MySpace songs sounded great, so I took a chance and bought the hard copy of it. I listened to the first few tracks and I liked it...then it went downhill. I couldn't help but notice every song sounded way too similar after a while and ruined it for me. It's a decent album, but the acclaim made it sound like it was one of the best albums this decade, which it was far from.

Although Reach for the Sun isn't having quite as catastrophic of an effect on me, I'm really beginning to hear a lack of individuality for each song. The first three...[read more]

I completely get where you're coming from. Though I have to say I feel the songs start to wash together near the middle. But much like Valencia's last album, when each song is so good (albeit very similar) it's hard to find an actual fault. I find that the more I listen to each songs the easier it is to discern them and pick out the differences. I'm not sure if it'll make my TOP 10 list for 2009 but it's definitely one of the best albums I've bought so far.

Yeah, I guess that's one way to look at it. Some of the songs are really great, don't get me wrong, but I can't help but feel they're too similar for me to fully enjoy. I will give them credit for their lyrics, they're some of the most honest words I've heard from a band in ages. For that, I'll think they'll crack my Top 10 towards the lower end of the list.

and i get your point about the songs sounding so similar. if it wasnt for the lyrics this album would be so mediocre. beside that. it still a really good album.

I actually completely agree with you too..
I loved them when I heard the Permanent Rain whenever it first came out, and I got super excited when I first read the review.
And I'm listening to it on purevolume for the second time, and it's just not doing much for me.
It's definitely not bad, by any means. It's great. But it's not amazing (with the exception of a few songs..the Permanent Rain is still one of my favorite songs ever :D)
Maybe once I listen to it through one or two more times I'll be able to make more of a distinction bewteen a majority of the songs and enjoy it a bit more. Bt for now, I'm merely mildly impressed.
