Young Statues - Age Isn't Ours EP

Young StatuesAge Isn’t Ours EP
Record Label: Run For Cover Records
Release Date: April 2, 2013

Young Statues’ self-titled debut record was as equally inviting as it was charming. In a word, the album was charismatic, blending acoustic indie tunes with upbeat chorus-driven pop jams. Now just two years later, after an acoustic EP and a covers EP, we get another taste of new music from the band with Age Isn’t Ours.

If Young Statues was the perfect first step for this band, then Age Isn’t Ours is five steps farther down that path. The band expands the boundaries this time around in all the right places, and it’s evident early on. See, opener “Eraser” begins with an acoustic guitar, yet right before the chorus kicks off, a rocking guitar line picks up as the bass feverishly dances in the background, changing the direction of the song entirely. It’s unexpected and bold, resulting in the best track the band has written. Both “So You Wait” and “Ghost Passenger” have the same carefree guitar distortion and old-fashioned feel, emphasizing how much the additional band members have helped Cirignano expand his potential even more.

Have no fear though, “My Only Friend” is the calm acoustic number you’ve been waiting for. Rather than going the traditional acoustic route, a weaving electric guitar tangos with Cirignano’s relaxed vocals, while the bass keeps your foot tapping along. In case you haven’t realized, this is a full band effort, and it really makes a difference when it comes to the meat of the music. The final “Foolish” works similarly and could have fit on the self-titled record. The track switches on and off from a guitar swaying tepidly in the background to chants and drums livening up the dance floor.

For only a six song EP, Age Isn’t Ours indicates that Young Statues will be heading down bigger roads in the near future. Taking the familiar sound of their debut record and cranking it up a few notches with some excelled instrumentation, the EP presents natural progression and a great next step. The full band crew fully helps push Cirignano to the next level, as his vocals and songwriting are stronger than ever. Age may not be theirs, but I have a feeling this year will be a big one for Young Statues, as they’ve already released the strongest EP of 2013 thus far.

8/10

Ryan, I've always liked your reviews, but your writing has gotten way way better in the last year or so. Congrats.

Loving this EP. Also, I must say, "So You Wait" is the best song The Dangerous Summer never wrote.
