Pentimento - Inside The Sea EP

PentimentoInside The Sea EP
Record Label: Paper + Plastick Records
Release Date: October 22, 2013

What a busy year it's been for Pentimento. Since the free release of their fantastic self-titled record around this time last year, the band has pretty much jumped on board every tour possible, getting their music out to as many people as possible. And you can understand why – their debut was full of one-liners and lines that I still think about constantly.

The follow-up EP, Inside The Sea, continues in vein of the self-titled, only with perhaps more hints to Where You Want To Be-era Taking Back Sunday. “Not So Young” demonstrates just this early on. The chorus of “Is this all I am? / Is this everything that I am meant to be?” is layered with high-pitched melodies in the background that scream throwback TBS. Not to mention the cathartic repetition of “I don’t mean anything I say” gets drilled in your head by Hansen’s rapid drumming. As always, Hansen's lyrics hit home just as hard, especially on “Just Friends,” with the line “I don’t think before I speak / What an empty attempt at a personality” being just one of the highlights of the upbeat and brutally honest “Just Friends.” The lines are buoyed by Vincent Caito’s meaty bassline and Lance Claypool’s fast-strummed guitar work.

Both “Any Minute Now…” and “It’s Okay” harken back to the more familiar, gritty sounding Pentimento. The former has foot-tapping “whoa-oh-oh"s, with the familiar structure of a slowed bridge that builds into a powerful chorus. This works especially well when Pauly softly admits, “It’s in my bones to turn my back and not feel a thing.” The soft touch makes the coldness right through to the core. This type of poignancy is what makes Pentimento stand out among most bands these days – you just don’t see this kind of honesty laid out on the table as much anymore.

Only four songs, Inside The Sea will make you crave more from this band already. The passion, straightforward emotion, and absolute sincerity within these songs ring true to the core of Pentimento. Fans of the self-titled record will play this EP for months to common, and it’s no wonder why. For such a young band, Pentimento are starting to already sound like veterans at their craft.

Best dudes doing some creative things way ahead of their peers.

Them and FCC deserve their hypes. Hard working and consistently amazing

I think It's Okay might be their best song yet. Fantastic release from a great bunch of guys. I only wish this EP were longer and I can't wait for their next full-length.

Like that you mentioned the "honest" that we don't hear to much of today. That's what makes the music hit so close to home sometimes. Not as much cliche that you hear in other music.

And agreed, these guys are great people. Real fun interacting with them on twitter, and there always full of thank you's at shows.

Lastly, Buffalo, NY. Yes.
