I don't know about a new direction but this sounds like early Spoon to me as opposed to something new. This song reminds me of something that you'd hear off "Girls Can Tell" ... way more garagey, sparse, and has the drunken swagger their earlier stuff has.

I just feel like they have been heading this way their entire career. To the really mainstream "indie" sound while holding on to nothing that made their first albums so special to me. But maybe its just me
