Before They Were Stars: Anthony Raneri

Posted by: Anton Djamoos (12/11/09)
This week's Before They Were Stars feature takes a look at Bayside frontman Anthony Raneri. Before his mouth was shooting blanks and portraits were bruised just like you, he was a 16-year-old guitarist in a band called The Saints of 35th Street. Check out the song "K.Y.G." in the replies along with Ant's reflection of his time in the band. Oh how different things could have been...

K.Y.G.

"I was in the Saints of 35th Street for about 2 years. The mastermind behind the band was a guy named Steve Trilivas from Astoria. Steve was singing, I was playing guitar, Bluto Fristacci was playing bass and my old friend Jimmy Dooom was playing drums, who I'd known from the Queens grindcore band "RPOD". I remember when they first asked me to come and play with them I was stoked. I was a big fan of Steve's songwriting from his old band the Heretics. Also, I was only 17 and they were all 21+ so the opportunity to play with some older wiser guys who had been around the New York City punk scene for a while was exciting. I remember us spending a lot of time together. We used to hang around in bars in Astoria that they all knew the owners of so they'd let me in or we'd hang at Steve's place in Astoria writing songs, talking about music and watching horror movies. It was great times. We made 1 record while I was in the band. It was called "A Breath Away from My Last" and I think we recorded it 2 separate 2 day sessions in 2000. 4 days to multi-track 12 songs is pretty crazy looking back but at the time, we were young and punk and I don't think we would have known what to do with more time if we had it. I still talk to the guys from the band now and then and hopefully we can all get back together to play again sometime. We made great music that I think really does hold up."

Big thanks to Anthony for taking part in this feature!

i wouldn't expect much less from anything anthony is involved in. i'm impressed he was only 17.

at warped tour this year, noticing the difference between bayside's lyrics and the other acts was just amazing. anthony is a pretty interesting guy, and definitely one of the most unique songwriters on the scene.

listened through all of the acoustic album yesterday. still amazing.

anthony's voice would do really well in front of this music, maybe Shudder was him trying to get back to this?

Oh wow, I liked it... and that is pretty interesting, I wish he would do the vocals as well, that would have been sweet.

But, it was that way for a reason, still sounded good to me.

This is pretty sweet. Fast-paced, melodic, etc. Diggin' it. Whoever handles this feature should take on A Wilhelm Scream and showcase "Tijuana Crackwhore." Worst/best song ever.

I liked it enough to listen to it twice. My favorite thus far from this series.
