Kill Paradise - The Second Effect

Reviewed by: npmshah (01/08/10)
Kill Paradise The Second Effect
Record Label: BreakSilence Recordings
Release Date: November 10, 2009

Colorado seems to be the epicenter of the “crunkcore”/synth-pop movement, having already produced scene superstars Breathe Carolina and 3OH!3. Kill Paradise is the latest synth-pop act to come out of the state. Unfortunately, Kill Paradise seems to lack even the mild amount of talent that Breathe Carolina and 3OH!3 possess. In fact, the band’s only legitimate claim to fame is the fact that one of Kill Paradise’s halves, Nick Cocozzella, produced the Breathe Carolina song “Diamonds,” which launched the latter synth-pop duo into the sights of Rise Records. Unfortunately, Cocozzella couldn’t work the same magic on his own music, as The Second Effect is a mundane synthpop album with whiny vocals, boring lyrics, and uninteresting synth loops.

However, focusing only on the negative would defeat the purpose of any review. To be fair, The Second Effect doesn’t completely fail. While most of the record is absolutely dreadful, “Miracle” is the dark horse. It combines a catchy, multi-layered intro with sweet lyrics and a catchy chorus; the song is everything that the record is not. Unfortunately, one song doth not an album make.

Kill Paradise’s The Second Effect seems to be an album meant only for the neon-laced preteens that frequent Hot Topic (which, incidentally, is the only place this album can be bought). It has no appeal broader than just a small sliver of the music fans who think Brokencyde are the next Rolling Stones, and even that is a stretch. This album has completely killed any interest I might have had in Kill Paradise, and in order to win me over, they would have to follow up this mediocre release with an Album of the Year.

the only reason i consider 3oh3 above the noise with this genre is because they are nice guys that dont take anything they do seriously, unlike the rest of these tools.

good review.

I don't think this a bad review at all, I'm just puzzled why you'd review something you don't like...

That's what I thought. maybe he was having a bad day, a breakup or something, and needed to beat something up.

I understand the review. Saw these guys live and thought they were fun. Checked out the album and thought that it sucked.

i remember seeing them and noticing that instead of just having the electronic beats played ipod style, they had a cool full electronic drum set, something ive never noticed other bands doing. but thats about it for them.

I was a fan of some of Kill Paradise's The Effect. I was hoping this would be a decent follow up. I was obviously wrong.

no. this review actually came at the end of one of the best weeks of my life. Which is why I decided to focus on what little positive there was in this record.

Oh snap.
But why review a record to destroy it? Doesn't that waste your life a bit?
Like, I can see reviewing a bad record if it's a band you like, but disappointed you. The only negative review I've done is of the new Cobra album.

well, I had requested this album through the AP.net review system, and it wasn't totally unlistenable, so i felt obligated to write the review. haha.

I think these guys have some potential. They sang good live, but they sooo need a band. You could hear the computer in the tracks playing from the laptop. They have a ways to go, but there is potential here. This is a pretty subdued record, but not bad. It has some nice moments, particularly "Katie and I."
