Pressed And - Hyper Thistle EP
Record Label: Mush Records
Release Date: July 24, 2012

And now for something completely different.

Hyper Thistle EP is an electro-pop album from Pressed And, a Brooklyn/North Carolina duo that makes music on their own terms. There's equal parts glitch, hip-hop, chill wave and dance in each of the four songs on this shimmering and head-turning EP. As evidenced by the hissing opener "Tusk in the Rock Flowers," there's something extremely quirky, albeit appealing about their version of electronic music. Anchored by processed vocals and complex electronic arrangements, "Tusk in the Rock Flowers," is a perfect introduction to this immensely talented tandem. For something a bit more relatable and commercial, the guitar-driven "Andross to Aneki," glides along winningly and stakes its claim as the EP's most memorable offering.

"Komuso Flutter Kick IV," feels more like "Tusk in the Rock Flowers," in its quirky arrangement but delivers the same kind of charisma and infectiousness as "Andross to Aneki." Of the EP's final two offerings, the slinky "When She Ran," is the most immediate ear-grabber, while the ambient "Sudden Ground," features more processed vocals and a celestial swirl of noise that feels distinctly cinematic.

Being that Hyper Thistle EP is just the duo's second effort, there's something incredibly effervescent about the execution that seems to suggest Pressed And is compromised of band members that know what they're doing inside a recording studio. Genre-bending, melodic and definitively experimental, there's something chiming, propulsive and atmospheric about every passing second here.

Art is at its best when its daring, provocative and passionate and Hyper Thistle is exactly that kind of album. With this kind of vision and this kind of execution, there's a very good chance Pressed And will reinvent the EDM playbook and stake their claim as one of the genre's most important bands.
