From the old P.T. Barnum hoax. Barnum would hang signs around his sideshow exhibits that said "This Way to the Egress" Most of the public was unaware that just meant exit and would accidentally leave having to pay a dime to get back in. When we first started we incorporated many aspects of circus and sideshow.
2. How did this band get started?
Tyrant Taylor the frontman, put out an ad on craigslist which Leading lady Saddle Sarah answered. The rest just fell together.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
The 6 of us draw from different genres and styles, but anything ol timey. Tom Waits is a huge influence for all of us. The old big bands of the '30s, Spaghetti western, Mr. Bungle, all kinds of stuff really.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Tom Waits because he was so ahead of his time and his experience from doing it for so long. Or Gogol Bordello because they would just be so much fun to tour with and their crowds are so full of energy.
5. Best food to eat on tour?
Oranges, they are high in Vitamins to keep you from getting sick plus they make the van smell good. And breakfast of any sort.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Hmm, well thats a good question. I guess mainly because we are real people playing real instruments, fighting our way through an industry that doesnt make it easy and through a society that rewards looks and watered down American Idol crap. Really we just love what we do and want to deliver an awesome show and great things to our fan base. We want everyone to be apart of a community that is about making and producing art and not becoming apart of the rat race. And if you are a part of the rat race, hopefully our music will provide you a little escape from the mundane.
7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
Jenna Jameson or Ron Jeremy.
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Our Fans and Voltaire.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
I dont know if this thread is big enough for that answer. I guess more then anything, we'd change what people are willing to spend their time and money on. The Music industry wouldn't mater or have any power if people got off of facebook and got out to shows. Shows and merch are where bands make their money and word of mouth promotion from the fans that are sweating and bleeding with you is the best advertising you can get. BUT if we had to change something, I guess we'd long for a time that MTV played actual MUSIC videos again.
10. Memorable tour experience?
The entire Black Unicorn Cabaret Tour with Artist and Animator VOLTAIRE. 27 shows in 32 days,...... it was a blast, exhausting and all around a great learning experience. Although our Censored tour with the UK's Joe Black was lovely b/c we got to spend some time in New Orleans.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
It means that there is still hope and people out there willing to do the foot work to make sure that bands can do it them selves rather then selling their souls to a label that will chew them up or make watered down replica music because they are afraid the public wont like them.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Personally my favorite song of all time to play is Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis by Tom Waits, My favorite EGRESS song is probably Mr. Green off of our new album.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Touring is how we take a vacation which isnt really a vacation. But our favorite destination is New Orleans.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Well my early childhood, most jazz and the beatles, because that's what my parents listened too. Once I was old enough to buy my own music, Nine Inch Nails.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
X-Ray vision, because it would be a blast.
16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Just Band stretches, but our after show ritual is a dance party!
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
That I dont drink or smoke.
18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio?
Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish? Well, it's unfortunate that pop radio is so drab, however music comes in phases and I think it will come back around and the music heads will take pride in owning albums and seeing shows like the early '90s and when it does EGRESS' music would totally hold up.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Make movies, sew clothes, practice one of the many instruments I play, write new songs.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
I try not to hide anything, but I can costume and make up for a show and be out the doors before any of the guys in the band are ready.
