Those who have heard the tracks, “Short Stories with Tragic Endings,” and, “Autumn’s Monologue,” by From Autumn to Ashes are familiar with the beatific voice of Melanie Wills. Aside from her guest appearances for FATA she also fronts her own band, One True Thing. On their debut record, Finally..., the band offers up an extremely solid effort, but nothing outstanding... yet. The record predominantly displays a pop-rock sound which may boast some hard edges but is consistently rooted in pop sensibility.
Melanie Wills’ voice is a very strong point for the band. I would consider her one of the best female singers in the genre, and while typically girl-fronted groups have not seen much success in our scene, groups like Eisley, Cruiserweight, and Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer keep the hope alive. Melanie really has incredible range and demonstrates true emotion, like when she wails, “I knew it from the start/This could be so hard/What would it be if it was easy?” on my favorite track, “Who’s Amazing”, a true pop gem on the album. There is something about the mixture of how she pronounces words and the tone in which she sings that is pretty striking, a distinctive feature that is much needed among the rather generic instrumentals and lyrics. “Will I Make It,” could easily be a single, being probably the most catchy jam on the album and, “Monster,” the opening track, is a better example of the hard edge and also one of the best songs present.
You might think a 2.8 is somewhat harsh, but I have nothing but good feelings about One True Thing. My problem is that, Finally..., while showing off some worthy qualities, is so close to achieving something great, but comes up just short. Perhaps in the future with some better production and a more focused and experienced band, they will grow into their sound, and mature into something more unique. If you are looking for some really good pop-rock or just have a thing for female vocalists, you might just love this album. However, next time around, if they draw from the quality of songs like “Monster,” and, “Who’s Amazing?” they have the potential to create some truly special music. |
