Lorde explains to The Fader why she insulted Diplo's penis.
I mean, I think often I say things and realize that Americans hear what I say differently to how I hear it. I love Wes and he’s a big brother to me and one of my first friends in the industry, and part of having a friendship with someone like that is not letting them say stupid shit. Taylor’s my friend as well, and I’m a girl, and if I see some weird body-shaming on my feed I’m going to be like, “Hey man…” We do still love each other, hopefully

USA Today is reporting that Lorde's "Royals" has been pulled from rotation in San Francisco for the duration of the World Series.
Even though Lorde sings, “We’ll never be royals….” in the chorus of her hit Royals song, two San Francisco radio stations have banned the song from their airwaves – at least while their town’s beloved San Francisco Giants are taking on the Kansas City Royals in the World Series.

Back in 2011/2012, Lorde featured on Characters, an album by her friends under the name And They Were Masked. She still went by her birth name at the time, and she seems to only have appeared on the tracks "Sands of John" and "Piece of Mind." The band claims to have been influenced by Fugazi, Massive Attack, At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, PJ Harvey, and more. Check it out in the replies.

Lorde will be curating the soundtrack to the new Hunger Games movie as well as providing the first single.
"Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance," Lorde said in a press release. "The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people."

The New York Times has published a conversation between Conor Oberst and Lorde.
A lot of that was starting at a young age, not realizing that it wasn’t cool to, like, express your emotions. I wasn’t old enough to be cynical or jaded. I had a similar reaction when I heard your music. So much stuff at your level, in the Top 40 world, is just like vapor: You hear a song and maybe you can hum the melody but you walk away with zero ideas having been communicated. And with your writing, you can do it all at once. You can have this amazing pop anthem that the whole world’s going to sing, and you can still communicate solid, concrete ideas and paint this very vivid picture of lost teenagers in...

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters recently recalled the first time he heard Lorde's "Royals," saying it was "it was sandwiched between all of that other stripper pop." He went on to say Lorde has "something about her that represented or resembled the Nirvana aesthetic," which is why she was one of the musicians selected alongside St. Vincent, Joan Jett, and Kim Gordon to front Nirvana at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Lorde has opened up about a variety of topics in a new New York Times interview.
People like to paint me in a certain way, but I’m a hugely sex-positive person and I have nothing against anyone getting naked. For me personally, I just don’t think it really would complement my music in any way or help me tell a story any better. It’s not like I have a problem with dancing around in undies — I think you can use that stuff in a hugely powerful way. It just hasn’t felt necessary for me.

New Zealand journalist Duncan Greive has written a fascinating piece on the rise of Lorde.
Afterwards, Cain says that in 20 years in the industry he's never come across an artist so engaged with the minutiae of their presentation. He points up at a giant poster of Lana Del Rey. "With her, we could do whatever we liked," he says.

Ella is frequently compared to Del Rey, though it infuriates her. Both are white women making pop music soaked in the rhythm and attitude of hip-hop. But Del Rey has a much more conventional narrative -- she had an image makeover prior to her breakout Born To Die album, and co-writes her songs with some of the biggest producers and writers in the industry.
